Kobach of Kansas, clinging to the slimmest of leads in the Republican primary for governor, said Thursday night that he planned to recuse himself from the vote-counting process. Earlier in the evening, his opponent, Gov. Jeff Colyer, said that some local election officials had been provided incorrect information by Mr. Kobach that could suppress votes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll be happy to recuse myself,\u201d Mr. Kobach, who oversees the state\u2019s elections, said <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CuomoPrimeTime\/status\/1027728647493279744\">in an interview with CNN.<\/a> Mr. Kobach, who has the endorsement of President Trump and has built a national reputation for warning of widespread vote fraud, suggested that his role in the Kansas count had been mostly symbolic anyway.<\/p>\n<p>The governor\u2019s fiery recusal request, and Mr. Kobach\u2019s pledge to comply, came after the nationally watched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/08\/08\/us\/politics\/kansas-primary-kobach-colyer.html?rref=collection%2Fbyline%2Fmitch-smith\"> primary<\/a> left the candidates separated by only<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2018\/08\/07\/us\/elections\/results-kansas-primary-elections.html\"> 191 votes<\/a> entering Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter, Mr. Colyer said some clerks had been provided incorrect information about which ballots to count, and he urged Mr. Kobach to appoint the state attorney general to handle future questions from local election workers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cIt has come to my attention that your office is giving advice to county  election officials \u2014 as recently as a conference call yesterday \u2014 and  you are making public statements on national television which are  inconsistent with Kansas law and may serve to suppress the vote in the  ongoing Kansas primary election process,\u201d Mr. Colyer <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.wixstatic.com\/ugd\/e21a55_397d038b070b442db230b5e64f4d3325.pdf\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\">wrote<\/a>.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Yeah.&nbsp; Classic Kobach.<\/p>\n<p>He has made a carreer out of invalidating votes that he does not like.<\/p>\n<p>The only difference this time is that he is disenfranchising white Republicans, not black and Hispanic Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>When this is all over, there really needs to be a serious investigation of his behavior, because Kobach is crooked as hell.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After a minor uproar, after Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach announcing that he would preside over his own recount, he has reversed himself: Secretary of State Kris W.
