{"id":178931,"date":"2018-07-16T18:56:00","date_gmt":"2018-07-16T23:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2018\/07\/16\/yeah-this-is-working-so-well\/"},"modified":"2018-07-16T18:56:00","modified_gmt":"2018-07-16T23:56:00","slug":"yeah-this-is-working-so-well","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2018\/07\/16\/yeah-this-is-working-so-well\/","title":{"rendered":"Yeah, This is Working So Well"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In response to new sanctions against new sanctions against Iran, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/db4c44c8-869b-11e8-96dd-fa565ec55929\">Russia is planning to invest fifty billion dollars in the Iranian energy industry<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Iran has touted $50bn worth of potential Russian investments in its oil and gas sector as it seeks to deepen its relationship with Moscow, amid mounting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/972765b8-5cfa-11e8-9334-2218e7146b04\">pressure from the US<\/a> to curb the country\u2019s energy exports and diplomatically isolate Tehran.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRussia is ready to invest $50bn in Iran\u2019s oil and gas sectors,\u201d Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior adviser to Iran\u2019s supreme leader, said during a visit to Moscow that included a meeting with President Vladimir Putin. \u201cMilitary and technical co-operation with Russia is of major importance to Iran.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Mr Velayati, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei\u2019s top diplomat, also used a media interview during his visit to say that a Russian oil company had already signed a $4bn deal with Iran that \u201cwill be implemented soon\u201d, without providing details. He added: \u201cTwo other major Russian oil companies, Rosneft and Gazprom, have started talks with Iran\u2019s oil ministry to sign contracts worth up to $10bn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The suggestion of deeper co-operation between the two countries\u2019 energy industries comes eight months after Russian companies signed preliminary agreements to invest up to $30bn in Iran\u2019s oil industry, as part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/141e6662-bf11-11e7-9836-b25f8adaa111\">visit by Mr Putin<\/a> to Tehran.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>But Mr Trump\u2019s decision to rip up that accord and threaten to sanction companies that trade in Iranian oil has led Tehran to work with Moscow.
