{"id":179016,"date":"2018-06-16T18:46:00","date_gmt":"2018-06-16T23:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2018\/06\/16\/your-military-industrial-complex-in-a-nutshell\/"},"modified":"2018-06-16T18:46:00","modified_gmt":"2018-06-16T23:46:00","slug":"your-military-industrial-complex-in-a-nutshell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2018\/06\/16\/your-military-industrial-complex-in-a-nutshell\/","title":{"rendered":"Your Military Industrial Complex in a Nutshell"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>As a part of supporting the Afghan military, the Pentagon is upgrading Kabul&#8217;s helicopters.<\/div>\n<p>There are a few small problems though:  In addition to the Afgan military not being able to maintain its new Black Hawk helicopters, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/21558\/pentagon-admits-afghanistans-new-black-hawks-cant-match-its-older-russian-choppers\">the Russian Helos that it is replacing outperform the Black Hawk by almost every metric<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/>A report from a top U.S. military watchdog has finally acknowledged that the UH-60A+ Black Hawks that the United States is supplying to the Afghan Air Force <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/10413\/the-us-plan-to-give-afghanistan-a-fleet-of-black-hawks-is-deeply-flawed\">are less capable<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/14502\/as-first-uh-60s-arrive-us-plan-to-dump-afghan-mi-17s-is-still-problematic\">harder to maintain<\/a> than the Russian-made Mi-17 Hip helicopters they have now. The review raises concerns that this could limit Afghanistan\u2019s ability to conduct operations across the country unless steps are taking to mitigate the loss of capability, something we <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/17409\/pentagon-watchdog-slams-u-s-backed-efforts-to-expand-the-afghan-air-force\">at The War Zone<\/a> have long warned could <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/17057\/afghanistans-rebuilt-uh-60s-could-actually-hurt-its-warfighting-ability-in-the-near-term\">easily be the case<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe transition [from Mi-17s to UH-60s] presents several challenges that have yet to be fully addressed,\u201d the report says in a section dedicated to the issue. \u201cBlack Hawks do not have the lift capacity of Mi-17s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are unable to accommodate some of the larger cargo items the Mi-17s can carry, and in general, it takes almost two Black Hawks to carry the load of a single Mi-17,\u201d the review continues. \u201cFurthermore, unlike Mi-17s, Black Hawks cannot fly at high elevations and, as such, cannot operate in remote regions of Afghanistan where Mi-17s operate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Mi-17 is \u2018much more conducive to the education level available in the general Afghan population than the UH-60As\u2019 when it comes to maintenance,\u201d the 9th Air Expeditionary Task Force-Afghanistan (AETF-A), the U.S. Air Force\u2019s top command for operations in Afghanistan, which also oversees advising the Afghan Air Force, said, according to the Pentagon Inspector General\u2019s review. \u201cThe expectation is that the AAF will be almost entirely reliant on contractors for Black Hawk maintenance in the near- to mid-term.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That reliance on contractors is a feature not a bug:&nbsp; This is more of the deferred compensation for general officers program that appears to be the raison d&#8217;\u00eatre of the Pentagon these days.<\/p>\n<p>Whoever made this decision will secure a well remunerated post military retirement sinecure with Sikorsky, one of its suppliers, or the contractors that the Afghans (actually us) are paying very well for support services.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As a part of supporting the Afghan military, the Pentagon is upgrading Kabul&#8217;s helicopters.
