{"id":179068,"date":"2018-05-26T18:59:00","date_gmt":"2018-05-26T23:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2018\/05\/26\/so-much-for-the-free-market\/"},"modified":"2018-05-26T18:59:00","modified_gmt":"2018-05-26T23:59:00","slug":"so-much-for-the-free-market","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2018\/05\/26\/so-much-for-the-free-market\/","title":{"rendered":"So Much for the Free Market"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Banks have decided to clamp down on financing gun purchases, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/05\/25\/us\/politics\/banks-gun-sales-republicans.html\">Republicans in Congress are trying to stop them<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">When Congress decided not to take significant action after a spate of mass shootings this year and last, some big banks opted to take matters into their own hands by restricting financing for gun sellers.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Now, Republican lawmakers are pressing regulators to stop banks from doing so, over concerns they are veering too far into social activism.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u201cIf you\u2019re going to turn us into a nation of red banks and blue banks, you\u2019re making a mistake,\u201d Senator John Kennedy, a Louisiana Republican and member of the banking committee, said in a recent interview before the latest shooting. \u201cDon\u2019t come crying to us when you screw up and you want the American taxpayer to bail you out.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Mr. Kennedy said he planned to file complaints with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau against banks that are effectively restricting gun sales by setting their own rules on legal products and refusing to do business with gun makers and retailers that do not comply. He is also working to get Republican colleagues to join him in writing legislation to stop banks from discriminating against gun buyers.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/03\/05\/business\/dealbook\/investors-gunmakers.html\">Major banks have taken a series of steps<\/a> this year to prevent guns from falling into the wrong hands. They are restricting their credit card and banking services to gun retailers and halting lending to gun makers that do not comply with age limits and background check rules determined by the banks.
