{"id":179078,"date":"2018-05-24T18:40:00","date_gmt":"2018-05-24T23:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2018\/05\/24\/gawd-help-me-i-am-praising-new-york-jets-management\/"},"modified":"2018-05-24T18:40:00","modified_gmt":"2018-05-24T23:40:00","slug":"gawd-help-me-i-am-praising-new-york-jets-management","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2018\/05\/24\/gawd-help-me-i-am-praising-new-york-jets-management\/","title":{"rendered":"Gawd Help Me, I am Praising New York Jets Management"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"border: 1px solid black; float: right; margin: 0px 10px; padding: 5px; text-align: center; width: 290px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/LcLoLoI.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" bordercolor=\"white\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/LcLoLoI.jpg\" width=\"280\" \/><\/a><br \/><i>Post and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/sports\/football\/lupica-nfl-owners-national-disgrace-kneeling-policy-article-1.4006308\">Daily News<\/a> on Same Side<\/i><\/div>\n<p>I am not a Jets fan, and as such, it probably makes me more likely to praise the management of that football franchise, but still, this is not something that I would have anticipated doing.<\/p>\n<p>The short version of this is that the owner is saying that <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2018\/05\/23\/jets-boss-wont-discourage-players-from-protesting-anthem\/\">he&#8217;s going to cover the fines for anyoneone on his team kneeling during the anthem<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">The Jets are not standing with the NFL in regard to standing for the national anthem. <\/p>\n<p>After the league <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2018\/05\/23\/nfl-comes-to-anthem-solution-that-erases-kneelers\/\">announced a rule change Wednesday<\/a> \u2014 saying players must either stand for the anthem or stay in the locker room while it is being played \u2014 Jets Chairman and CEO Christopher Johnson said the team would support players who might choose to kneel anyway, and not issue any team fines. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI plan to sit in the very near term with Coach (Todd) Bowles and our players to discuss today\u2019s decision regarding the National Anthem,\u201d Johnson said <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nyjets\/status\/999357427656077323\">in a statement<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs I have in the past, I will support our players wherever we land as a team. Our focus is not on imposing any Club rules, fines, or restrictions. Instead we will continue to work closely with our players to constructively advance social justice issues that are important to us. I remain extremely proud of how we demonstrated unity last season as well as our players\u2019 commitment to strengthening our communities.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Under the new league rule, if a player does go on the field and protest during the anthem, the team would be fined by the league. The new policy also enables each club to have its own rules if a player is on the field and does \u201cnot stand and show respect for the flag and the Anthem.\u201dAnd, Johnson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsday.com\/sports\/football\/jets\/national-anthem-christopher-johnson-fines-1.18700702\">told Newsday<\/a>, the team will absorb any league-imposed fines. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do not like imposing any club-specific rules,\u201d he said. \u201cIf somebody (on the Jets) takes a knee, that fine will be borne by the organization, by me, not the players.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Good for them.<\/p>\n<p>They are doing the right thing, and they are doing the smart thing.<\/p>\n<p>They might want to consider extending this whole, &#8220;Doing the right thing and doing the smart thing,&#8221; bit to the game of Football, where their performance over the past two seasons has been lackluster.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Post and Daily News on Same Side I am not a Jets fan, and as such, it probably makes me more likely to praise the management of that football franchise, but still, this is not something that I would have anticipated doing.
