{"id":179289,"date":"2018-03-29T18:59:00","date_gmt":"2018-03-29T23:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2018\/03\/29\/this-is-a-feature-not-a-bug-6\/"},"modified":"2018-03-29T18:59:00","modified_gmt":"2018-03-29T23:59:00","slug":"this-is-a-feature-not-a-bug-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2018\/03\/29\/this-is-a-feature-not-a-bug-6\/","title":{"rendered":"This is a Feature, Not a Bug"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>The <i>New York Times<\/i> editorial board has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/03\/27\/opinion\/trump-census-2020-citizenship.html\">strongly condemned the proposal by the Trump administration to add a question about immigration status to the 2020 census<\/a>:<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">In a last-minute move that would give Republicans an advantage in maintaining control of the House of Representatives, the Trump administration is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/03\/26\/us\/politics\/census-citizenship-question-trump.html\">reinstating a question about citizenship<\/a> to the 2020 census. Coming from an administration that has been hostile toward immigrants, the change was not surprising, but it\u2019s galling nonetheless.<\/p>\n<p>Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commerce.gov\/news\/press-releases\/2018\/03\/us-department-commerce-announces-reinstatement-citizenship-question-2020\">announced the decision Monday<\/a>, less than a week before the Census Bureau, which his department oversees, is supposed to send final questions for the 2020 census to Congress. If his decision stands \u2014 the attorney general of California has <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AGBecerra\/status\/978623405837692928\">filed a lawsuit<\/a> to block it, and other elected officials are preparing to do so \u2014 it would be the first time in 70 years that the federal government has asked people to specify their citizenship status on the census form sent to every household.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Even Mr. Ross acknowledged in an October House hearing that adding questions to the census reduced response rates because \u201cthe more things you ask in those forms, the less likely you are to get them in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>By now, many people have come to expect that Mr. Trump will inject politics into every decision.
