{"id":179317,"date":"2018-03-23T18:17:00","date_gmt":"2018-03-23T23:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2018\/03\/23\/this-is-an-excellent-idea\/"},"modified":"2018-03-23T18:17:00","modified_gmt":"2018-03-23T23:17:00","slug":"this-is-an-excellent-idea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2018\/03\/23\/this-is-an-excellent-idea\/","title":{"rendered":"This is an Excellent Idea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In New York, there are proposals to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/what-if-off-duty-employees-unplugged-1521753474\">prevent employers from requiring workers to stay connected to the job when they are off of work<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">New Yorkers are used to having their happy hours interrupted with emails or calls from the boss.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">But a new proposal being floated in the City Council could give them the right to hit ignore.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">A measure protecting private-sector employees from penalties for ignoring after-hours or weekend work communications is gaining steam among New York Democrats, while drawing concern from business groups.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Councilman Rafael Espinal (D., Brooklyn) introduced the bill in the New York City Council on Thursday, and state Sen. Diane Savino (D., Staten Island) is working on her own version to introduce in the state legislature.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u201cIt\u2019s important for workers to be able to draw a line between their work lives and personal lives,\u201d said Mr. Espinal.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Mr. Espinal\u2019s legislation is modeled after the \u201cRight to Disconnect\u201d law that passed in France last year. His legislation would make it illegal for an employer with more than 10 workers to require employees to access their work-related communications outside of normal work hours. It would prohibit employers from taking action against employees for not responding.
