{"id":179348,"date":"2018-03-13T18:08:00","date_gmt":"2018-03-13T23:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2018\/03\/13\/they-have-managed-to-outrage-me-again\/"},"modified":"2018-03-13T18:08:00","modified_gmt":"2018-03-13T23:08:00","slug":"they-have-managed-to-outrage-me-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2018\/03\/13\/they-have-managed-to-outrage-me-again\/","title":{"rendered":"They Have Managed to Outrage Me Again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So, Donald Trump has fired Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-5495087\/Trump-FIRES-Rex-Tillerson-secretary-state.html\">via Twitter<\/a>, no less) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/03\/13\/us\/politics\/trump-tillerson-pompeo-america-first.html\">announced his intent to replace him with current CIA head Mike Pompeo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is not a shock, it&#8217;s been telegraphed for a while, and it is a not an outrage.<\/p>\n<p>What is an outrage is who has been named to replace Pompeo at the CIA, Gina Haspel, the inspiration for the main character in the <strike>Leni Riefenstahl<\/strike> Kathryn Bigelow film <i>Zero Dark Thirty<\/i>, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2018\/mar\/13\/who-is-gina-haspel-trump-cia-director-torture-site-link\">ran the CIA torture camp in Thialand, and then destroyed evidence to evade Congressional oversight<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Donald Trump\u2019s pick for head of the Central Intelligence Agency, Gina Haspel, reportedly oversaw a black site prison in Thailand where terrorism suspects were tortured. She briefly ran the prison in 2002, anonymous officials told the Associated Press.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Deputy CIA director could face court deposition over post-9\/11 role in torture<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">If the US Senate confirms Haspel, she would be the first female director of the agency, but the historic significance of her nomination was immediately overshadowed by her reported link to the black site, where two suspected al-Qaida members were waterboarded.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u201cThe fact that she\u2019s been able to stay in the agency, rise in the agency and now is in line to be director should be deeply troubling,\u201d Larry Siems, author of the Torture Report, a book analysing government documents relating to Bush-era torture <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2014\/dec\/09\/cia-torture-report-released\">released in 2014<\/a>, told the Guardian.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Haspel also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecipherbrief.com\/column\/network-take\/why-haspel-makes-sense-deputy-cia-director-1091\">drafted a cable<\/a> ordering the destruction of CIA interrogation videos in 2005. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">A US justice department investigation into the tapes\u2019 destruction ended without charges, but the event helped spark a landmark investigation into US detentions and interrogations. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Christopher Anders, deputy director of the American Civil Liberties Union\u2019s Washington legislative office, claimed Haspel \u201cwas up to her eyeballs in torture\u201d. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Anders urged the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/cia\">CIA<\/a> to declassify her torture record before the Senate considers her nomination.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>She has been described as having, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/trumps-cia-pick-gina-haspel-ran-a-laboratory-for-torture\">Ran a laboratory for torture<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This crap has me agreeing with John Sidney McCain III, who has described her as a representing, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/politics\/mccain-trump%E2%80%99s-cia-pick-was-involved-in-%E2%80%98one-of-the-darkest-chapters-in-american-history%E2%80%99\/ar-BBKaZB5\">One of the darkest chapters in American history<\/a>,&#8221; which is a complete mind f%$# to me.<\/p>\n<p>While we are at it, it should be noted that German prosecutors are <a href=\"https:\/\/lawandcrime.com\/high-profile\/prosecutors-reviewing-request-to-issue-arrest-warrant-for-trumps-new-cia-director\/\">considering issuing an arrest warrant against Haspel for her torture<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Once again, the world has exceeded my already blindingly low expectations.<\/p>\n<p>She should be in jail, but Obama decided, in defiance of signed treaties, to prosecute any of the torturers.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks, Obama.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So, Donald Trump has fired Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State (via Twitter, no less) and announced his intent to replace him with current CIA head Mike Pompeo.
