{"id":179773,"date":"2017-10-29T20:01:00","date_gmt":"2017-10-30T01:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2017\/10\/29\/meanwhile-in-iceland\/"},"modified":"2017-10-29T20:01:00","modified_gmt":"2017-10-30T01:01:00","slug":"meanwhile-in-iceland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2017\/10\/29\/meanwhile-in-iceland\/","title":{"rendered":"Meanwhile, In Iceland"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>It appears that, for just the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> time in its history, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2017\/oct\/29\/iceland-election-centre-right-parties-appear-to-lose-majority\">Iceland will not have a right wing government<\/a>:<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Iceland\u2019s ruling centre-right parties have lost their majority after a tight election that could usher in only the second left-of-centre government in the country\u2019s history as an independent nation. <\/p>\n<p>With all votes counted after the Nordic island\u2019s second snap poll in a year, the conservative Independence party of the scandal-plagued outgoing prime minister, Bjarni Benediktsson, was on course to remain parliament\u2019s largest. <\/p>\n<p>But it lost five of of its 21 seats in the 63-member Althing, potentially paving the way for its main opponent, the Left-Green Movement headed by Katr\u00edn Jakobsd\u00f3ttir, to form a left-leaning coalition with three or more other parties. <\/p>\n<p>The make-up of the new government, however, remains uncertain since both left- and rightwing blocs have said they deserve a chance to try to form a coalition and Iceland\u2019s president has yet to designate a party to begin talks. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2017\/sep\/15\/iceland-row-sex-abuse-letter-brings-down-government\">Benediktsson called the election last month<\/a> after his three-party centre-right government collapsed over an alleged attempt to cover up efforts by his father to help \u201crestore the honour\u201d of a convicted child sex offender. <\/p>\n<p>The outgoing government had been only formed 10 months ago after early elections triggered by his predecessor\u2019s resignation. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2016\/apr\/05\/iceland-prime-minister-resigns-over-panama-papers-revelations\">Sigmundur Dav\u00ed\u00f0 Gunnlaugsson stepped down<\/a> amid public fury at revelations in the Panama Papers that his family had sheltered money offshore.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If the Left-Green Movement had a modicum of political savvy, and my guess is that they don&#8217;t, they would take this opportunity to make changes to the political culture to make sure that their government is not just a short interregnum between more rule by the Independence Party.<\/p>\n<p>This is important because Iceland won by bucking the standard neoliberal policy prescriptions, but the, largely through the Independence Party, there are (as the Panama Papers showed) still a number people who are eager to get back into that failed system.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It appears that, for just the 2nd time in its history, Iceland will not have a right wing government: Iceland\u2019s ruling centre-right parties have lost their majority after a tight election that could usher in only the second left-of-centre government in the country\u2019s history as an independent nation.
