{"id":179827,"date":"2017-10-14T18:41:00","date_gmt":"2017-10-14T23:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2017\/10\/14\/israel-has-2nd-thoughts-about-v-22-acquisition\/"},"modified":"2017-10-14T18:41:00","modified_gmt":"2017-10-14T23:41:00","slug":"israel-has-2nd-thoughts-about-v-22-acquisition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2017\/10\/14\/israel-has-2nd-thoughts-about-v-22-acquisition\/","title":{"rendered":"Israel Has 2Nd Thoughts about V-22 Acquisition"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"border: 1px solid black; float: right; margin: 0px 10px; padding: 5px; text-align: center; width: 360px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/7VHSgQ6.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" bordercolor=\"white\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/7VHSgQ6.jpg\" width=\"350\" \/><\/a><br \/><i>V-22s Range Advantage has a Cost<\/i><\/div>\n<p>Israel seemed poised to purchase the tilt-rotor V-22 Osprey, and now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightglobal.com\/news\/articles\/israel-steps-back-from-v-22-purchase-442158\/\">they have put this on hold<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I am not particularly surprised.<\/p>\n<p>The V-22 is a maintenance hog, and cost a fair amount to operate.<\/p>\n<p>While the Osprey is about 100 kts faster, has a longer range, it can only carry about 1\/3 of the payload, even though it has 2\/3 of the installed power.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, unlike a conventional helicopter, the V-22 does not have a meaningful auto-rotation capability, and its performance with external loads is pathetic.<\/p>\n<p>Israel simply does not have the need for the additional capabilities offered by the tilt-rotor:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">The Israeli air force has frozen its evaluation of the Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey, with a senior defence source indicating that the tiltrotor is unable to perform some missions currently conducted using its Sikorsky CH-53 transport helicopters.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">In January 2014, the US Department of Defense notified Congress about its intention to sell six V-22s to Israel. This followed an evaluation conducted by air force personnel, which led to the service seeking a rapid acquisition to support special operations. The proposed purchase met with opposition from elsewhere within Israel&#8217;s defence ministry, however.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Other potential candidates to replace the Israeli air force&#8217;s aged CH-53s by around 2025 include Sikorsky&#8217;s new CH-53K and the Boeing CH-47 Chinook.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Simply put, the IDF does not have the requirements, such as amphibious landings from extreme distance, that have driven the V-22, and as such, it does not make sense.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>V-22s Range Advantage has a Cost Israel seemed poised to purchase the tilt-rotor V-22 Osprey, and now they have put this on hold.
