They assumed it\u2019d be an easy feat \u2014 until Roy Moore got involved.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Democrats and Republicans led by then-Gov. Bob Riley (R) worked together on an amendment to remove language in the state constitution mandating \u201cseparate schools for white and colored children\u201d and allowing poll taxes, Jim Crow-era requirements that people to pay to vote that disenfranchised most black people.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The changes were purely symbolic \u2014 all of the state constitutional language had already been struck down by state and federal courts \u2014 but civil rights and business leaders saw it as a way to heal old wounds and make the state more attractive to big business.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The opposite happened instead, and Moore\u2019s fierce opposition likely made the difference.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Modern conservatism is indistinguishable from racism, and has been since William F.
