{"id":179944,"date":"2017-09-05T18:48:00","date_gmt":"2017-09-05T23:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2017\/09\/05\/standing-up-to-bullies\/"},"modified":"2017-09-05T18:48:00","modified_gmt":"2017-09-05T23:48:00","slug":"standing-up-to-bullies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2017\/09\/05\/standing-up-to-bullies\/","title":{"rendered":"Standing Up to Bullies"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Recently there was a video of a police officer brutalizing a nurse at the University of Utah for notifying him of hospital policies.<\/div>\n<p>The hospital has now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/morning-mix\/wp\/2017\/09\/04\/utah-hospital-bars-cops-from-contact-with-nurses-after-appalling-arrest\/?tid=sm_tw&amp;outputType=default-article&amp;deferJs=true\">banned police from their wards and forbidden them from having contact with nurses<\/a>: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">The University of Utah Hospital, where a nurse was manhandled and arrested by police as she protected the legal rights of a patient, has imposed new restrictions on law enforcement, including barring officers from patient-care areas and from direct contact with nurses. <\/p>\n<p>Gordon Crabtree, interim chief executive of the hospital, said at a <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/LIOygq6A9SA\">Monday news conference<\/a> that he was \u201cdeeply troubled\u201d by the arrest and manhandling of burn unit nurse Alex Wubbels on July 26. In accord with hospital policy and the law, she had refused to allow a Salt Lake City police officer to take a blood sample from an unconscious patient. Wubbels obtained a copy of the body cam video of the confrontation and, after consulting her lawyer, the hospital and police officials, released it last week. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will not happen again,\u201d Crabtree said, praising Wubbels for \u201cputting her own safety at risk\u201d to \u201cprotect the rights of patients.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Margaret Pearce, chief nursing officer for the University of Utah hospital system, said she was \u201cappalled\u201d by the officer\u2019s actions and has already implemented changes in hospital protocol to avoid any repetition.<\/p>\n<p>She said police will no longer be permitted in patient-care areas, such as the burn unit where Wubbels was the charge nurse on the day of the incident and from emergency rooms.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, officers will have to deal with \u201chouse supervisors\u201d instead of nurses when they have a request.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Seriously, today&#8217;s law enforcement seems to attract more than their share of bullies.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m&nbsp; friend of mine who was a counselor was rather more charitable about such behavior, he believed that that the overwhelming majority of cops had serious PTSD issues after 5 years on the force.<\/p>\n<p>In either case, this guy should not be a peace officer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently there was a video of a police officer brutalizing a nurse at the University of Utah for notifying him of hospital policies.
