{"id":179966,"date":"2017-08-28T18:43:00","date_gmt":"2017-08-28T23:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2017\/08\/28\/what-an-evil-little-sh\/"},"modified":"2017-08-28T18:43:00","modified_gmt":"2017-08-28T23:43:00","slug":"what-an-evil-little-sh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2017\/08\/28\/what-an-evil-little-sh\/","title":{"rendered":"What an Evil Little Sh%$!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am referring, of course, to a Silicon Valley type, who have honed the little sh%$ to a fine edge.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, I am referring to to Peter Thiel, who is <a href=\"http:\/\/40yrs.blogspot.com\/search?q=thiel+vampire&amp;max-results=20&amp;by-date=true\">literally a vampire who wants to use the blood of the young to extend his lifespan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The latest bit of evil is his <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/science\/2017\/08\/bucking-fda-peter-thiel-funds-patently-unethical-herpes-vaccine-trial\/\">funding &#8220;patently unethical&#8221; human experimentation<\/a>, specifically testing a live virus vaccine without any regulatory oversight on the island of St. Kitts:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Heavyweight tech investor and FDA-critic Peter Thiel is among conservative funders and American researchers backing an offshore herpes vaccine trial that blatantly flouts US safety regulations, <a href=\"http:\/\/khn.org\/news\/offshore-rush-for-herpes-vaccine-roils-debate-over-u-s-safety-rules\/\">according to a Monday report by <i>Kaiser Health News<\/i><\/a>. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The vaccine\u2014a live but weakened herpes virus\u2014was first tested in a 17-person trial on the Caribbean Island of St. Kitts without federal oversight or the standard human safety requirement of an institutional review board (IRB) approval. Biomedical researchers and experts have sharply rebuked the lack of safety oversight and slammed the poor quality of the data collected, which has been rejected from scientific publication. However, investors and those running the trial say it is a direct challenge to what they see as innovation-stifling regulations by the Food and Drug Administration.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Madden, <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2016\/10\/report-tech-investor-peter-thiel-will-donate-1-25m-to-trump-campaign\/\">Thiel<\/a>, and other investors have invested $7 million into the vaccine\u2019s development, according to Rational Vaccines, the company orchestrating the trial. Though Thiel could not be reached for comment, he has been openly critical of the FDA\u2019s review process. At one point, he claimed that the agency\u2019s processes were so overbearing that \u201cyou would not be able to invent the polio vaccine today.\u201d <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The lead researcher behind the vaccine, William Halford, formerly of Southern Illinois University, made similar claims. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.siumed.edu\/pr\/highlights\/game-changer-herpes-vaccine-shows-promise.html\">a positive university press release<\/a>, Halford was quoted as saying: \u201cMany of the virus vaccines we currently put in our kids\u2014chickenpox, mumps, measles, and rubella\u2014were developed using live-attenuated viruses in the \u201950s, \u201960s and \u201970s when the regulatory landscape was more relaxed\u2026 and they have worked remarkably well.\u201d <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">He went on to suggest that the FDA has made \u201cbarriers too high\u201d and that countries with less regulation were better for vaccine and drug development. \u201cThere are governments around the world that the WHO [World Health Organization] has approved for vaccine development,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re talking to those types of governments.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Other researchers and experts strongly disagreed with Halford&#8217;s stance and handling of a live, attenuated virus vaccine, which can cause infections in the uninfected or severe side-effects in those already infected. \u201cWhat they\u2019re doing is patently unethical,\u201d Jonathan Zenilman, chief of Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center\u2019s Infectious Diseases Division, told <i>KHN<\/i>. \u201cThere\u2019s a reason why researchers rely on these protections. <b><span style=\"font-size: 100%; font-variant: small-caps;\">People can die<\/span><\/b>.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Robert Califf, who served as FDA commissioner during the Obama era, agreed. \u201cThere\u2019s a tradition of having oversight of human experimentation, and it exists for good reasons,\u201d he said. \u201cIt may be legal to be doing it without oversight, but it\u2019s wrong.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">A spokesperson for Southern Illinois University, one of the vaccine\u2019s patent holders, said that the university has no legal responsibility to ensure proper safety protocols for the trial. However, after questions about the lack of IRB <span style=\"color: black;\">[Institutional Review Board]<\/span> approval (a federal requirement), the spokesperson said that the university would \u201ctake this opportunity to review our internal processes to ensure we are following best practices.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(<i>emphasis mine<\/i>)<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the quality of the study being so poor that it was refused for publication, there are also reports of skin lesions from a study size of only 17 patients.<\/p>\n<p>I would have thought that this would have merited a visit from the FDA, and possibly an FBI investigation for conspiracy, but it appears that the rules do not apply to rich people, which is an even bigger problem.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am referring, of course, to a Silicon Valley type, who have honed the little sh%$ to a fine edge.
