I was Hoping for a Trial in Open Court"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The lawsuit agaisnt the CIA&#8217;s torture psychologists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2017\/aug\/17\/cia-torture-lawsuit-settled-against-psychologists-who-designed-techniques\">has been settled<\/a>, so the rest of us won&#8217;t find out what they did:<br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\"><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\">A settlement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/law\/2017\/aug\/08\/cia-torture-program-lawsuit-trial-enhanced-interrogation\">in a lawsuit against two psychologists<\/a> who were paid tens of millions of dollars to design torture techniques used by the CIA in black-site prisons was announced on Thursday. The terms of the settlement were undisclosed. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\">Two of the plaintiffs in the case, Suleiman Abdullah Salim and Mohamed Ben Soud, were held and brutalized in 2003 in a secret CIA facility in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/afghanistan\">Afghanistan<\/a> that prisoners called \u201cThe Darkness\u201d. Salim, who is Tanzanian, and Ben Soud, who is Libyan, were eventually released and are now living in their home countries with their families. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\">A third plaintiff is a young Afghan computer engineer whose uncle, Gul Rahman, was tortured to death in November 2002 in the same facility. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\">The three filed the lawsuit in October 2015 against James Mitchell and John \u201cBruce\u201d Jessen, contract psychologists who devised a menu of abusive interrogation methods and billed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/cia\">CIA<\/a> between $75m and $81m.
