{"id":180015,"date":"2017-08-07T18:54:00","date_gmt":"2017-08-07T23:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2017\/08\/07\/what-a-surprise-6\/"},"modified":"2017-08-07T18:54:00","modified_gmt":"2017-08-07T23:54:00","slug":"what-a-surprise-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2017\/08\/07\/what-a-surprise-6\/","title":{"rendered":"What a Surprise\u2026\u2026\u2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>America&#8217;s state security apparatus is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/nation-world\/world\/americas\/guantanamo\/article165286797.html\">using the classification review process to suppress a book that details torture at Guantanamo Bay<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">A former NCIS investigator who worked at the wartime prison during the Bush administration has written a book, \u201cUnjustifiable Means.\u201d Now his civil liberties lawyers are asking a bipartisan group of senators for help getting the Pentagon to clear it for publication. <\/p>\n<p>Retired 27-year career federal worker Mark Fallon\u2019s manuscript \u201chas been held up for more than seven months in \u2018pre-publication review,\u2019 and we are increasingly concerned that some in the government are committed to suppressing Mr. Fallon\u2019s account,\u201d the lawyers write six senators. They include Republican John McCain, the former Vietnam War prisoner, and Democrat Dianne Feinstein, who chaired the Senate Intelligence Committee when it drew up the so-called Torture Report on the Bush administration\u2019s secret CIA prison network. <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/3912339-Knight-ACLU-Letter-on-Torture-Manuscript.html\">lawyers\u2019 letter<\/a> describes what might be troubling Defense Department officials about the book: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u201c \u2018Unjustifiable Means\u2019 concerns the Bush administration\u2019s policies authorizing the cruel treatment and torture of detainees. It is an insider\u2019s account of the moral and strategic costs of those policies and the many ways that honorable Americans working in government protested and resisted them.\u201d <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Between 2002 and 2004 Fallon was Special Agent in Charge of the Department of Defense\u2019s Criminal Investigation Task Force, and was responsible for some interrogations and evaluating intelligence with an eye toward prosecution by military commission.
