{"id":180041,"date":"2017-07-31T18:20:00","date_gmt":"2017-07-31T23:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2017\/07\/31\/support-your-local-law-enforcement\/"},"modified":"2017-07-31T18:20:00","modified_gmt":"2017-07-31T23:20:00","slug":"support-your-local-law-enforcement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2017\/07\/31\/support-your-local-law-enforcement\/","title":{"rendered":"Support Your Local Law Enforcement"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Remember that <a href=\"http:\/\/40yrs.blogspot.com\/search?q=planting+drugs&amp;max-results=20&amp;by-date=true\">video of a cop planting drugs<\/a>?<\/div>\n<p>Well now we have seen <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2017\/07\/faked-body-cam-footage-gets-dozens-of-criminals-set-free-and-more-likely\/\">at least 34 cases tainted by evidence tampering by the Baltimore cops<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Maryland prosecutors have tossed 34 criminal cases and are re-examining dozens more in the aftermath of recent revelations that a Baltimore police officer accidentally recorded himself planting drugs in a trash-strewn alley. <\/p>\n<p>Baltimore State&#8217;s Attorney Marilyn Mosby said that, in all, 123 cases are under review in the wake of a scandal in which one officer has been suspended and two others put on administrative duty. Body cam footage <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2017\/07\/cop-didnt-know-his-body-cam-was-on-footage-shows-him-planting-drugs\/\">revealed<\/a> nearly two weeks ago showed one of the officers planting drugs when he didn&#8217;t realize his body cam was recording. The Baltimore Police Department&#8217;s body cams, like many across the nation, capture footage 30 seconds before an officer presses the record button. The footage was turned over to defense attorneys as part of a drug prosecution\u2014and that&#8217;s when the misdeed was uncovered.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Mosby added that the authorities are likely to dismiss many more cases, and they have reviewed hundreds of body cam videos. At least one other is suspicious, she said.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The real question is how common this sort of behavior really is.<\/p>\n<p>My guess is that this is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Remember that video of a cop planting drugs?
