{"id":180085,"date":"2017-07-22T17:46:00","date_gmt":"2017-07-22T22:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2017\/07\/22\/it-aint-the-crime-its-the-coverup\/"},"modified":"2017-07-22T17:46:00","modified_gmt":"2017-07-22T22:46:00","slug":"it-aint-the-crime-its-the-coverup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2017\/07\/22\/it-aint-the-crime-its-the-coverup\/","title":{"rendered":"It Ain&#8217;t the Crime, It&#8217;s the Coverup"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>While I am dubious of any major law breaking on the links between Russia and the Trump campaign, I have noted that the coverup may very well take down Trump and his Evil Minions<sup>\u2122<\/sup>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>It is, after all, how a &#8220;Third rate burglary&#8221; forced Nixon from office. <\/div>\n<p>We now have evidence that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/national-security\/sessions-discussed-trump-campaign-related-matters-with-russian-ambassador-us-intelligence-intercepts-show\/2017\/07\/21\/3e704692-6e44-11e7-9c15-177740635e83_story.html\">Jefferson Beauregard Sessions lied to the Senate about the nature of his contacts with the Russian ambassador<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Rather unsurprisingly, the US State Security Apparatus monitors the ambassador&#8217;s communications, and they have what looks a lot like a smoking gun:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Russia\u2019s ambassador to Washington told his superiors in Moscow that he discussed campaign-related matters, including policy issues important to Moscow, with Jeff Sessions during the 2016 presidential race, contrary to public assertions by the embattled attorney general, according to current and former U.S. officials. <\/p>\n<p>Ambassador Sergey Kislyak\u2019s accounts of two conversations with Sessions \u2014 then a top foreign policy adviser to Republican candidate Donald Trump \u2014 were intercepted by U.S. spy agencies, which monitor the communications of senior Russian officials in the United States and in Russia. Sessions initially failed to disclose his contacts with Kislyak and then said that the meetings were not about the Trump campaign.<\/p>\n<p>One U.S. official said that Sessions \u2014 who testified that he had no recollection of an April encounter \u2014 has provided \u201cmisleading\u201d statements that are \u201ccontradicted by other evidence.\u201d A former official said that the intelligence indicates that Sessions and Kislyak had \u201csubstantive\u201d discussions on matters including Trump\u2019s positions on Russia-related issues and prospects for U.S.-Russia relations in a Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p>Sessions has said repeatedly that he never discussed campaign-related issues with Russian officials and that it was only in his capacity as a U.S. senator that he met with Kislyak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never had meetings with Russian operatives or Russian intermediaries about the Trump campaign,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/powerpost\/top-gop-lawmaker-calls-on-sessions-to-recuse-himself-from-russia-investigation\/2017\/03\/02\/148c07ac-ff46-11e6-8ebe-6e0dbe4f2bca_story.html?utm_term=.9e492c9db7e9\">Sessions said in March<\/a> when he announced that he would recuse himself from matters relating to the FBI probe of Russian interference in the election and any connections to the Trump campaign.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I am amused.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While I am dubious of any major law breaking on the links between Russia and the Trump campaign, I have noted that the coverup may very well take down Trump and his Evil Minions\u2122.
