{"id":180111,"date":"2017-07-16T18:52:00","date_gmt":"2017-07-16T23:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2017\/07\/16\/one-of-my-coping-mechanisms\/"},"modified":"2017-07-16T18:52:00","modified_gmt":"2017-07-16T23:52:00","slug":"one-of-my-coping-mechanisms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2017\/07\/16\/one-of-my-coping-mechanisms\/","title":{"rendered":"One of My Coping Mechanisms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/i0bazxg.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/i0bazxg.jpg\" style=\"cursor: pointer; float: right; margin: 0px 0px 10px 10px;\" width=\"250\" \/><\/a>The past week was not (and hasn&#8217;t been for my adult life) a good time for me.<\/p>\n<p>So, today, I decided to do something that I haven&#8217;t ever done before culinarily, home pickling.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It gets my head into a better place.<\/p>\n<p>I did the whole megillah, using Ball (mason type) jars, to create a pickle that does not need refrigeration.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a canned pickle.<\/p>\n<p>I used Romanesco &#8220;Fractal&#8221; broccoli, but I am also going to do carrots, green beans, normal broccoli, zucchini, yellow squash, and Brussels sprouts, because I have a sh%$ load of pickling brine left over.<\/p>\n<p>I used pickling spice, bay leaves, chipolte peppers, juniper berries, dill, salt, apple cider vinegar, and garlic in the brine, and in about 1\/3 of the jars, I added some sugar for sweet pickles.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The past week was not (and hasn&#8217;t been for my adult life) a good time for me.
