{"id":180156,"date":"2017-07-06T21:23:00","date_gmt":"2017-07-07T02:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2017\/07\/06\/this-is-not-an-accident\/"},"modified":"2017-07-06T21:23:00","modified_gmt":"2017-07-07T02:23:00","slug":"this-is-not-an-accident","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2017\/07\/06\/this-is-not-an-accident\/","title":{"rendered":"This is Not an Accident"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Does anyone believe that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/07\/05\/business\/how-uber-may-have-improperly-taxed-its-drivers.html\">Uber made an honest mistake in tax calculations when it took hundreds of millions of dollars from its drivers<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>I certainly don&#8217;t:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Amid the turmoil at Uber that resulted in Travis Kalanick\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/06\/21\/technology\/uber-ceo-travis-kalanick.html\">stepping down<\/a> as chief executive, the company announced a series of changes in late June aimed at improving its drivers\u2019 work experience, including a new tipping option in its passenger app. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">But even as Uber makes a concerted effort to win over drivers, it has not acknowledged all the ways it may have squeezed them in New York State.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">In May, Uber admitted to taking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/05\/23\/business\/economy\/uber-drivers-tax.html\">excessive commissions<\/a> out of the fares of its New York drivers, who are independent contractors, and promised to make amends. Increasing evidence, however, suggests that the company may have shortchanged the drivers by far greater sums than it acknowledged.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">The following are signs that the ride-hailing service improperly deducted what could amount to hundreds of millions of dollars from drivers\u2019 earnings to pay taxes that, under New York State law, are technically due from passengers:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 12px;\"><span style=\"color: blue;\">Uber receipts from other states reflect a tax accounting at odds with the company\u2019s justification for deducting sales tax from the fares received by its New York drivers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: blue;\">Language from Uber\u2019s recent contracts indicates that the company should not have taken the taxes from those fares. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: blue;\"><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\">Uber has insisted there was nothing improper in its handling of the taxes.
