{"id":180248,"date":"2017-06-14T21:49:00","date_gmt":"2017-06-15T02:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2017\/06\/14\/ups-employee-goes-postal\/"},"modified":"2017-06-14T21:49:00","modified_gmt":"2017-06-15T02:49:00","slug":"ups-employee-goes-postal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2017\/06\/14\/ups-employee-goes-postal\/","title":{"rendered":"UPS Employee Goes Postal"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>And then we have the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/lanow\/la-me-ln-san-francisco-shooting-downtown-20170614-story.html\">155<sup>th <\/sup>mass shooting of the year in San Francisco<\/a>.<\/div>\n<p>Is it just me, or does anyone else see the irony in a UPS guy going Postal?<\/p>\n<p>We live in strange times:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">A gunman shot and killed three people at a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/topic\/business\/transportation-industry\/ups-ORCRP015929-topic.html\">United Parcel Service<\/a> facility in San Francisco on Wednesday morning before fatally shooting himself in front of police officers, authorities said.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Two others were wounded by gunfire, according to San Francisco police, and five had injuries that were probably sustained during the rush to evacuate.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The lone gunman, identified by police as Jimmy Lam, 38, shot himself in the head, Assistant Chief Toney Chaplin said. Two guns were recovered at the scene.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Authorities said the incident was not believed to be connected to terrorism. Police Chief William Scott told The Times that investigators were uncertain about Lam\u2019s motive.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">UPS spokesman Steve Gaut said Lam was a driver who was wearing his  uniform when he opened fire inside the four-story shipping facility. At  the time, workers were gathering for their morning meeting before  departing to deliver parcels, he said.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Lam, a resident of San Francisco, had filed a grievance in March complaining about excessive overtime, Joseph Cilia, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/topic\/jobs-workplace\/unions\/international-brotherhood-of-teamsters-ORCIG0009-topic.html\">Teamsters Union<\/a> official, told the Associated Press. The Teamsters local represents UPS workers in San Francisco.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It appears that workplace shooters never follow my advice, which is to target upper management.<\/p>\n<p>This whole &#8220;Going Postal at UPS&#8221; thing is kind of ironic, the protestations of grammar Fascists notwithstanding.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>And then we have the 155th mass shooting of the year in San Francisco.
