The charges may stem from the publication of US State Department cables in 2010 and their more recent of disclosure of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2017\/mar\/07\/wikileaks-publishes-biggest-ever-leak-of-secret-cia-documents-hacking-surveillance\">CIA hacking tools<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you like or dislike WikiLeaks \u2013 especially if you dislike them \u2013 it\u2019s important to understand just how dangerous this potential prosecution is to the future of journalism in the United States. Newspapers publish classified information all the time, and any prosecution of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/wikileaks\">WikiLeaks<\/a> puts journalists of all stripes at risk of a similar fate. Even WikiLeaks\u2019 harshest critics need to denounce this potential move as a grave threat to the first amendment.<\/p>\n<p>People may not realize it, but not a week goes by without classified information on the front pages of the New York Times, Washington Post or Wall Street Journal.
