{"id":180561,"date":"2017-03-15T19:11:00","date_gmt":"2017-03-16T00:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2017\/03\/15\/this-is-a-bright-line-that-has-been-crossed\/"},"modified":"2017-03-15T19:11:00","modified_gmt":"2017-03-16T00:11:00","slug":"this-is-a-bright-line-that-has-been-crossed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2017\/03\/15\/this-is-a-bright-line-that-has-been-crossed\/","title":{"rendered":"This Is a Bright Line That Has Been Crossed"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>You can argue about whether or not the special forces inserted into Syria have a combat role or not.<\/div>\n<p>Personally, I think that the whole &#8220;they are just training forces&#8221; dodge is a canard.<\/p>\n<p>That being said, when you <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2017\/03\/10\/marines-tasked-with-firing-howitzers-in-syria-are-just-advisers-says-sean-spicer\/\">move in artillery units with their guns<\/a>, you are involved in the ground war, period, full stop:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">The Pentagon has deployed several hundred Marines to northern Syria, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/checkpoint\/wp\/2017\/03\/08\/marines-have-arrived-in-syria-to-fire-artillery-in-the-fight-for-raqqa\/?utm_term=.6de4c7131931\">Washington Post<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/03\/08\/politics\/marines-raqqa-assault-syria\/\">CNN<\/a> reported this week. Their mission: firing long-range artillery to help recapture Raqqa, ISIS\u2019s self-proclaimed capital city. <\/p>\n<p>The Marines are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2017\/03\/08\/us-marines-move-syria-howitzers.html\">equipped<\/a> with M777 howitzers, which can fire GPS-guided explosives up to 25 miles. <\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a big change from the \u201ctrain, advise, and assist\u201d role U.S. forces have been playing so far \u2014 although as with many previous troop deployments to Iraq and Syria, it was not debated, let alone authorized, by Congress. <\/p>\n<p>But the White House press secretary brushed off a question about the move, saying that sending \u201cseveral hundred advisers\u201d did not amount to \u201chostile action.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Right-wing radio host John Fredericks asked Sean Spicer on Thursday whether Trump was committed to seeking congressional authorization for new deployments. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think there\u2019s a big difference between an authorization of war than [sic] sending a few hundred advisers,\u201d Spicer replied. \u201cAnd I think most in Congress would probably agree with that as well. I think that\u2019s a big difference between a hostile action and going in to address some certain concerns, whether it\u2019s certain countries in the Middle East or elsewhere.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Spicer referred the question to the Department of Defense. But when reached by The Intercept, a Pentagon spokesperson disputed Spicer\u2019s characterization. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is fire support,\u201d said Maj. Adrian Rankine-Galloway, a public affairs officer for the Marine Corps, explaining that the new deployment would fire long-range artillery in an assault on Raqqa. \u201cThey will be providing partner support for the Syrian Democratic Forces.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is unequivocally a combat role.&nbsp; This is boots on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>This if f%$#ing artillery, aka the &#8220;King of the Battlefield.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We are in for a world of hurt here.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You can argue about whether or not the special forces inserted into Syria have a combat role or not.
