And yet a number of the most influential figures in Democratic politics\u2014the people who are ostensibly responsible for translating this energy into political and electoral action\u2014missed the marches completely because they were at a retreat for bajillionaire donors at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.turnberryislemiami.com\/\">something called the &#8220;Turnberry Isle&#8221; luxury resort<\/a> near Miami. <\/p>\n<p>The gathering was hosted by David Brock, the onetime Clinton-hating right-wing quasi-journalist goon who switched sides and, during the latest election cycle, ran a number of pro-Hillary super PACs and advocacy groups. (Hat tip to <a href=\"http:\/\/observer.com\/2016\/11\/clinton-henchman-david-brock-revamps-establishment-with-billionaire-donor-retreat\/\">the Observer<\/a> for its colorfully accurate description of Brock as a &#8220;henchman.&#8221;) Among the attendees at Brock&#8217;s event, via a program <a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/article\/139947\/david-brock-will-never-successful-koch-brothers\">helpfully snagged by the <i>New Republic<\/i><\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: blue;\">Five of the candidates running for the chairmanship of the Democratic National Committee, including Keith Ellison and Thomas Perez.  (The one candidate who <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PeteButtigieg\/status\/822924869297905667\">marched<\/a> instead of attending the retreat was South Bend, Indiana, mayor and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/the_slatest\/2016\/05\/03\/indiana_primary_results_live_blog.html\"><i><b>Slate<\/b><\/i> contributor Pete Buttigieg<\/a>. Attaboy, Mayor Pete!)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: blue;\">Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards, AFL-CIO political director Michael Podhorzer, and the presidents of EMILY&#8217;s List, NARAL Pro-Choice America, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Democracy_Alliance\">Democracy Alliance<\/a>.  (Richards and NARAL president Ilyse Hogue were at retreat events on Friday but also spoke at the Women&#8217;s March on Washington on Saturday.  EMILY&#8217;s List president Stephanie Schriock and Democracy Alliance president Gara LaMarche attended both the Miami retreat and the D.C. march as well.)*<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: blue;\">&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/rubycramer\/david-brock-wants-to-build-his-own-koch-donor-network?utm_term=.et4445YYqa#.jb0NNB667A\">More than 120<\/a>&#8221; major Democratic donors.
