{"id":180747,"date":"2017-01-15T05:20:00","date_gmt":"2017-01-15T10:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2017\/01\/15\/we-used-to-make-things-that-worked-in-this-country\/"},"modified":"2017-01-15T05:20:00","modified_gmt":"2017-01-15T10:20:00","slug":"we-used-to-make-things-that-worked-in-this-country","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2017\/01\/15\/we-used-to-make-things-that-worked-in-this-country\/","title":{"rendered":"We Used to Make Things That Worked in This Country"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Now, after a development timeline that stretches back into the last century, the US Navy <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2017\/01\/11\/us_navy_emals_woes_uss_gerald_r_ford\/\">still cannot get it&#8217;s Electromagnetic Aircraft Launching System (EMALS) to work<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">The US Navy is having difficulties with its latest aircraft carrier&#8217;s Electromagnetic Aircraft Launching System (EMALS) \u2013 the same system which the UK mooted fitting to its new Queen Elizabeth-class carriers.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">The US Department of Operational Test and Evaluation (DOTE) revealed yesterday, in its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dote.osd.mil\/pub\/reports\/FY2016\/pdf\/navy\/2016cvn78.pdf\">end-of-year report<\/a> [PDF] for financial year 2016, that the EMALS fitted to the new nuclear-powered carrier USS Gerald R.
