{"id":180766,"date":"2017-01-10T19:05:00","date_gmt":"2017-01-11T00:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2017\/01\/10\/she-would-say-that-wouldnt-she\/"},"modified":"2017-01-10T19:05:00","modified_gmt":"2017-01-11T00:05:00","slug":"she-would-say-that-wouldnt-she","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2017\/01\/10\/she-would-say-that-wouldnt-she\/","title":{"rendered":"She Would Say That, Wouldn&#8217;t She?*"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over at the <i>Washington Post<\/i>, Margaret Sullivan, a media columnist (and former Ombud for the <i>NY Times<\/i>)&nbsp; suggests that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/style\/its-time-to-retire-the-tainted-term-fake-news\/2017\/01\/06\/a5a7516c-d375-11e6-945a-76f69a399dd5_story.html\">we should stop using the term &#8220;Fake News&#8221;, particularly when applied to major metropolitan newspapers like the <i>Post<\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It appears that she is mightily offended that people are calling out the <i>WaPo<\/i> for publishing fake news (the non-existent Vermont Power hack) just because they, well, you know, published fake news.<\/p>\n<p>She thinks that the term has, &#8220;Had its 15 minutes of fame.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s be clear:  If you have an anonymous source, and they burn you repeatedly, and you don&#8217;t burn the source, and you keep going back to the well for more quotes from them, as the <i>Post<\/i> has done with the US state security apparatus since its founding (with a few notable exceptions), it&#8217;s fake news.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/HdQqrLI.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/HdQqrLI.jpg\" style=\"cursor: pointer; float: right; margin: 0px 0px 10px 10px;\" width=\"290\" \/><\/a>Use the same standards as libel for public figures:  A reckless disregard for the truth, and a quick Google <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.findlaw.com\/definition\/reckless-disregard-of-the-truth.html\">gives us this<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Disregard of the truth or falsity of a defamatory statement by a person who is highly aware of its probable falsity or entertains serious doubts about its truth or when there are obvious reasons to doubt the veracity and accuracy of a source [the knowingly false statement and the false statement made with reckless disregard of the truth , do not enjoy constitutional protection <i>&#8220;Garrison v. Louisiana , 379 U.S. 64 (1964)&#8221;<\/i><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The <i>Washington Post<\/i> is not just <b>regularly<\/b> burnt by its sources in intelligence, it is <b>routinely<\/b> burnt by these sources.<\/p>\n<p>The reporters know this, the editors know this, and Margaret Sullivan knows this, and <i>they just don&#8217;t care<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>This is the very epitome of fake news.<\/p>\n<p><sup>*<\/sup><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">This is a reference to Mandy Rice-Davies and the Profumo Affair, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mandy_Rice-Davies\">who when told that Lord Astor denied having ever met her<\/a>, much less f%$#ed her, replied with a rather similar quote.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over at the Washington Post, Margaret Sullivan, a media columnist (and former Ombud for the NY Times)&nbsp; suggests that we should stop using the term &#8220;Fake News&#8221;, particularly when applied to major metropolitan newspapers like the Post.
