Temperatures are forecast to soar about 50\u00b0F above normal, which would bring them near the freezing point at the North Pole. <\/p>\n<p>As isolated data points, the back-to-back winter warm-ups would be weird. But taken in the larger context, it\u2019s part of an<a href=\"http:\/\/wxshift.com\/climate-change\/climate-indicators\/arctic-sea-ice\">unsettling trend<\/a> for a region that is being <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatecentral.org\/news\/2016-arctic-report-card-grim-20968\">rapidly reshaped by climate change<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>A quick recap: Arctic sea ice <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatecentral.org\/news\/arctic-sea-ice-peak-record-low-again-20183\">hit its lowest peak<\/a> recorded in March (besting the record set in 2015), hit it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatecentral.org\/news\/2016-low-arctic-sea-ice-20702\">second-lowest extent<\/a> recorded in September, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatecentral.org\/news\/arctic-sea-ice-record-low-20903\">started shrinking in November<\/a> \u2014 at a time when ice should be growing \u2014 following a heat wave.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>50 degrees?!?!?<\/p>\n<p>I think that even in a best case scenario, the harm in the decades ahead will be on an almost unimaginable scale.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The temperature at the North Pole will be about 50 degrees above normal: For the second year in a row, the Arctic is facing a late December heat wave (at least by Arctic winter standards).
