{"id":180881,"date":"2016-12-02T21:22:00","date_gmt":"2016-12-03T02:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2016\/12\/02\/clearly-raising-the-minimum-wage-in-seattle-was-anabject-failure\/"},"modified":"2016-12-02T21:22:00","modified_gmt":"2016-12-03T02:22:00","slug":"clearly-raising-the-minimum-wage-in-seattle-was-anabject-failure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2016\/12\/02\/clearly-raising-the-minimum-wage-in-seattle-was-anabject-failure\/","title":{"rendered":"Clearly, Raising the Minimum Wage in Seattle  was anAbject Failure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two years after $15.00 an hour became the law in Seattle <a href=\"http:\/\/ritholtz.com\/2016\/12\/seattle-min-wage-update\/\">the city has experienced some of the strongest employment growth in the nation<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">In light of a recent monthly release from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), time for a quick trip to the glorious pacific northwest and the Seattle, WA area to revisit what\u2019s been happening there in the wake of that city\u2019s rising minimum wage.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Well, in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bls.gov\/oes\/current\/msa_def.htm#42644\">Seattle-Bellevue-Everett Metropolitan Division<\/a> (MD), comprised of King and Snohomish Counties, BLS just reported (on November 30) this:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/HMwQa7C.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/HMwQa7C.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\">Now, as good as that news is (and it\u2019s pretty impressive), it does  represent a two county area and not just the city of Seattle proper.  Some may recall that in many of his pieces on Seattle, <\/span>[American Enterprise Institute Puke] <span style=\"color: blue;\">Mark Perry very  inappropriately used the even larger three-county <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bls.gov\/oes\/current\/msa_def.htm#42660\">Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA)<\/a>, and I <a href=\"http:\/\/ritholtz.com\/2015\/08\/mark-perry-doesnt-understand-geography\/\">called him out<\/a> on that.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Well, as luck would have it, we can actually drill down to the city of Seattle proper and take a look at its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bls.gov\/lau\/data.htm\">unemployment rate (among other things)<\/a>.
