Critics have accused the social network of allowing false and hoax news stories to run rampant, with <a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/selectall\/2016\/11\/donald-trump-won-because-of-facebook.html\">some suggesting<\/a> that Facebook contributed to Donald Trump\u2019s election by letting hyper-partisan websites spread false and misleading information. Mark Zuckerberg has addressed the issue twice since Election Day, most notably in a carefully worded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/zuck\/posts\/10103253901916271\">statement<\/a> that reads: \u201cOf all the content on Facebook, more than 99 percent of what people see is authentic. Only a very small amount is fake news and hoaxes. The hoaxes that do exist are not limited to one partisan view, or even to politics.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/>Still, it\u2019s hard to visit Facebook without seeing phony headlines like \u201cFBI Agent Suspected in Hillary Email Leaks Found Dead in Apparent Murder-Suicide\u201d or \u201cPope Francis Shocks World, Endorses Donald Trump for President, Releases Statement\u201d promoted by no-name news sites like the <a href=\"http:\/\/denverguardian.com\/2016\/11\/05\/fbi-agent-suspected-hillary-email-leaks-found-dead-apparent-murder-suicide\/\">Denver Guardian<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/endingthefed.com\/pope-francis-shocks-world-endorses-donald-trump-for-president-releases-statement.html\">Ending The Fed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>According to two sources with direct knowledge of the company\u2019s decision-making, Facebook executives conducted a wide-ranging review of products and policies earlier this year, with the goal of eliminating any appearance of political bias. One source said high-ranking officials were briefed on a planned News Feed update that would have identified fake or hoax news stories, but disproportionately impacted right-wing news sites by downgrading or removing that content from people\u2019s feeds. According to the source, the update was shelved and never released to the public. It\u2019s unclear if the update had other deficiencies that caused it to be scrubbed. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey absolutely have the tools to shut down fake news,\u201d said the source, who asked to remain anonymous citing fear of retribution from the company. The source added, \u201cthere was a lot of fear about upsetting conservatives after Trending Topics,\u201d and that \u201ca lot of product decisions got caught up in that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/g\/posts\/10101648538367704?pnref=story\">Facebook post<\/a> published after the election, former Facebook product designer Bobby Goodlatte blamed the social network for boosting the visibility of \u201chighly partisan, fact-light media,\u201d and for not taking bigger steps to combat the spread of fake news in the lead-up to the election. \u201cA bias towards truth isn\u2019t an impossible goal for News Feed,\u201d he wrote. \u201cBut it\u2019s now clear that democracy suffers if our news feeds incentivize bullshit.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Yeah \u2026\u2026\u2026 That whole free market saving the world thing? \u2026\u2026\u2026 Not so much.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It appears that Facebook has given up on trying to prevent fake news from showing up on its users feeds because said fake news overwhelmingly comes from right wing sources, and they are too terrified of the flying monkey crowd to tweak their algorithm: It\u2019s no secret that Facebook has a fake news problem.
