{"id":180983,"date":"2016-11-06T20:35:00","date_gmt":"2016-11-07T01:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2016\/11\/06\/how-finance-is-killing-us-part-mcmlvii\/"},"modified":"2016-11-06T20:35:00","modified_gmt":"2016-11-07T01:35:00","slug":"how-finance-is-killing-us-part-mcmlvii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2016\/11\/06\/how-finance-is-killing-us-part-mcmlvii\/","title":{"rendered":"How Finance is Killing Us, Part MCMLVII"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It turns out that much of what we see in terms of pharmaceutical price gouging is <a href=\"http:\/\/wolfstreet.com\/2016\/11\/03\/p-e-firms-flip-drugs-in-price-gouging-scheme-that-cannibalizes-entire-us-economy\/\">an artifact of the pernicious effects of our modern finance system<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">The ravenous price increases that pharmaceutical companies slap on their medicines are part of the reason the US health care system is eating an ever larger slice of consumer, corporate, and government spending, and why the rest of the economy has trouble moving forward. Some of the price increases have turned into scandals with plenty of mouth-wagging by politicians.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Private equity firms have figured this out. You can make a ton of  money with a basic formula: Fund a newly created outfit that buys the  rights to a prescription drug with little or no competition and with  stagnant or declining sales, jack up the price of the drug, then flip  the company at an enormous profit.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">This has become the latest way of wringing out the American economy  without contributing anything to it, and at the expense of everyone  else.&nbsp;So <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2016-11-02\/buy-and-flip-booms-in-drugs-market-as-private-equity-moves-in\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a> dug into the role private equity firms play in these schemes.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Companies will do whatever they can to build, use, and abuse monopolies,  dysfunctional markets, patent laws, and other government protections in  order to maximize profits <a href=\"http:\/\/wolfstreet.com\/2016\/07\/15\/big-pharma-sales-boom-on-drug-price-increases\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">while cannibalizing the entire economy<\/a>. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">They don\u2019t care. And they\u2019re not required to care.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The fault lies with Congress and regulators that have been \u201ccaptured\u201d by the industry. They\u2019ve allowed and encouraged this form of price gouging.
