{"id":181035,"date":"2016-10-20T21:30:00","date_gmt":"2016-10-21T02:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2016\/10\/20\/tom-daschle-would-suck-off-a-corpse-for-a-cheeseburger\/"},"modified":"2016-10-20T21:30:00","modified_gmt":"2016-10-21T02:30:00","slug":"tom-daschle-would-suck-off-a-corpse-for-a-cheeseburger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2016\/10\/20\/tom-daschle-would-suck-off-a-corpse-for-a-cheeseburger\/","title":{"rendered":"Tom Daschle Would Suck off a Corpse for a Cheeseburger"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Tom Daschle, who never left Washington, DC after losing his bid for reelection in 2004, and has become a lobbying hired gun, and as Matt Taibbi noted in the above hed, has no shame.<\/div>\n<p>Case in point, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibtimes.com\/political-capital\/tom-daschle-pushed-hillary-clinton-back-aetna-merger-while-refusing-register-aetna\">lobbying Hillary Clinton while refusing to register as a lobbyist<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Former Democratic Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle pushed Hillary Clinton\u2019s top aides to consider supporting a massive health insurance merger for one of his clients \u2014 even though at the time he was not registered to be a company lobbyist.<\/p>\n<p>Daschle <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibtimes.com\/political-capital\/aetna-hires-tom-daschle-other-former-government-officials-feds-consider-its-merger\"> registered<\/a> to be a lobbyist for Aetna in February of 2016, which subjected him to disclosure and ethics regulations. However, an <a href=\"https:\/\/wikileaks.org\/podesta-emails\/emailid\/21636\"> email<\/a> released Thursday by Wikileaks shows Daschle pressing the company\u2019s agenda with political power players in October 2015.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to reach out in reference to Hillary\u2019s statements today regarding the insurance mergers,\u201d Daschle wrote to Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta on the day Clinton publicly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-election-clinton-idUSKCN0SF21R20151021\">raised questions<\/a> about the merger. \u201cI certainly understand her concerns over the pending deals. I\u2019ve been working with Aetna on ACA [Affordable Care Act] involvement for the past several years. That has led to other health related matters including the merger. Their team has what they view to be compelling arguments around the benefits of the Humana merger and why it will be beneficial for consumers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Daschle said: \u201cWould you and your team be willing to have a conversation with them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clinton&#8217;s campaign ultimately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hillaryclinton.com\/briefing\/statements\/2016\/07\/25\/illary-for-americas-statement-on-the-doj-lawsuit-against-health-insurance-mergers\/\">declared<\/a> its support for a Justice Department lawsuit aimed at blocking the merger. <\/p>\n<p>In 2015, a joint <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/news\/2015\/01\/coming-out-of-the-cool-as-congress-convenes-former-colleagues-will-soon-be-calling-from-k-street\/\"> study<\/a> by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics and the Sunlight Foundation spotlighted how many former members of Congress appear to be circumventing ethics rules by working in government relations on behalf of corporate clients, but not registering as lobbyists.<\/p>\n<p>Daschle&#8217;s wife \u2014&nbsp;a former federal aviation regulator-turned-airline lobbyist \u2014&nbsp;opened her own&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2008\/11\/daschles-wife-to-open-lobbyist-firm-015799\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lobbying firm<\/a> in 2008.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t just an ethics issue.&nbsp; It&#8217;s what I call back loaded bribery, and it is a cancer on the American body politic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tom Daschle, who never left Washington, DC after losing his bid for reelection in 2004, and has become a lobbying hired gun, and as Matt Taibbi noted in the above hed, has no shame.
