either of the current ruling parties<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Iceland\u2019s Pirate Party (\u2018P\u00edratar\u2019) has issued an up-front refusal to work with either of the two current governing parties after the next elections \u2013 in a move unprecedented in Icelandic political history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese early elections have come about as a result of the corruption revealed to the world by the Panama Papers,\u201d explains Pirate MP Birgitta J\u00f3nsd\u00f3ttir. \u201cFive ministers have been exposed as corrupt since the current government took power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn some of the biggest protests in Icelandic history, the public expressed their desire for change,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: blue;\">In a press conference yesterday, the Pirates ruled out any possibility of entering a coalition with either of the current two governing parties, the centre-right Independence Party (\u2018Sj\u00e1lfst\u00e6\u00f0isflokkurinn\u2019) and the centrist Progressive Party (\u2018Frams\u00f3knarflokkurinn\u2019).<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the Pirates have sent a letter to a leaders of the three other opposition parties currently with MPs in the Icelandic Parliament (\u2018Al\u00feingi\u2019) and to the brand-new Regeneration (\u2018Vi\u00f0reisn\u2019) party, inviting them to pre-election coalition talks.<\/span> <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The may be aided in their goal by a <a href=\"http:\/\/icelandmonitor.mbl.is\/news\/politics_and_society\/2016\/10\/19\/iceland_s_left_greens_in_last_minute_election_surge\/\">surge in the polls by the Green Party<\/a>: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">A brand-new opinion poll now gives Iceland\u2019s Left-Green party (\u2018Vinstrihreyfingin \u2013 Gr\u00e6nt frambo\u00f0\u2019) a 19.2% share of the vote \u2013 four points higher than in the previous similar poll.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The latest survey, conducted by Icelandic daily Fr\u00e9ttabla\u00f0i\u00f0 (link in Icelandic) and dated 17-18 October, puts the Left-Greens hot on the heels of the second-place Pirate Party (\u2018P\u00edratar\u2019).<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Iceland is perhaps is the only nation on earth that has actually experienced meaningful and positive political change as a result of the financial crisis, as opposed to the rest of the world, which has given us, Nigel Farage, Marine le Pen, Gert Wilders, Frauke Petry, Donald Trump, and those of a similar
