{"id":181057,"date":"2016-10-15T21:41:00","date_gmt":"2016-10-16T02:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2016\/10\/15\/this-would-have-been-unthinkable-just-ten-years-ago\/"},"modified":"2016-10-15T21:41:00","modified_gmt":"2016-10-16T02:41:00","slug":"this-would-have-been-unthinkable-just-ten-years-ago","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2016\/10\/15\/this-would-have-been-unthinkable-just-ten-years-ago\/","title":{"rendered":"This Would Have Been Unthinkable Just Ten Years Ago"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Walloonian Parliament just <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.eu\/pro\/belgian-regional-government-set-to-block-eu-canada-trade-deal\/\">put a stake through the heart of the Canada\/EU trade pact<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">The EU\u2019s once-mighty trade negotiators never dreamed that their powers would be stripped from them so unceremoniously \u2014 and possibly for good. <\/p>\n<p>The Francophone parliament of the Federation of Wallonia-Brussels \u2014 only 10 minutes\u2019 walk from EU headquarters \u2014 stands to win a place in history for sinking the EU\u2019s landmark <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.eu\/pro\/german-constitutional-court-backs-eu-canada-trade-deal\/\">trade deal with Canada<\/a> and potentially for scuppering the European Commission\u2019s ability to lead the world\u2019s biggest trade bloc for many years.<\/p>\n<p>Failure to conclude the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) by this month\u2019s deadline would be a devastating blow to the EU, which has spent seven years working on the tariff-slicing agreement with Ottawa.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pfwb.be\/en\/the_federation_wallonia_brussels\">Federation of Wallonia-Brussels<\/a> parliament, which focuses on the cultural and educational concerns of 4.5 million French speakers in Belgium, voted Wednesday evening to reject CETA because of worries about public services and agriculture. Laetitia Naklicki, a spokesperson for Minister-President Rudy Demotte, said this vote meant that the government of the French-speaking community \u201cwould not issue its full power for signing CETA to the federal government.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Unless the Belgian central government can find an imaginative compromise quickly, the EU will be unable to corral the signatures of all 28 EU countries before an EU-Canada summit on October 27. The pressure on Belgian Prime Minister <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/charles-michel-belgium-is-vigilant-for-new-ways-of-terrorism\/\">Charles Michel<\/a> is only likely to increase Friday, when another regional assembly, Wallonia, also voted against CETA. <\/p>\n<p>Under Belgium\u2019s complex constitution, all five regional governments must approve the trade deal before the federal government can give consent.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The fact that these deals have become increasingly more difficult to pass, and as such will become far more limited in scope.<\/p>\n<p>This is a good thing.<\/p>\n<p>I really do hope that this is the start of a trend.<\/p>\n<p>The increasing investment of authority in anti-democratic institutions has been a disaster for everyone but the elites staff, and directly benefit from, those institustions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Walloonian Parliament just put a stake through the heart of the Canada\/EU trade pact: The EU\u2019s once-mighty trade negotiators never dreamed that their powers would be stripped from them so unceremoniously \u2014 and possibly for good.
