{"id":181273,"date":"2016-08-15T19:48:00","date_gmt":"2016-08-16T00:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2016\/08\/15\/once-again-we-see-cooperation-working-better-than-capitalism\/"},"modified":"2016-08-15T19:48:00","modified_gmt":"2016-08-16T00:48:00","slug":"once-again-we-see-cooperation-working-better-than-capitalism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2016\/08\/15\/once-again-we-see-cooperation-working-better-than-capitalism\/","title":{"rendered":"Once Again, We See Cooperation Working Better than Capitalism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A rural cooperative in Mexico has gotten a permanent license, and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2016\/aug\/15\/mexico-mobile-phone-network-indigenous-community\">it has delivered a service an order of magnitude cheaper than the private politically connected crony capitalists running most of Mexico&#8217;s cell phone services<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Until this month, Celia P\u00e9rez could only afford a brief weekly call to her husband, Rub\u00e9n Mart\u00ednez, who left left their remote rural community in Mexico two years ago to find a job in the United States.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">P\u00e9rez, 25, was pregnant with their third child when Mart\u00ednez headed north; he made it to New Jersey and regularly wires home money from his construction job, but the long separation and infrequent calls have been tough on everyone.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Now, a legal triumph by indigenous activists has cracked the monopoly enjoyed by Mexico\u2019s powerful telephone magnates \u2013 including the world\u2019s richest man, Carlos Slim \u2013 and opened the door to new services which will slash the cost of communication.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Indigenous Communities Telecommunications (TIC) last month won a long battle with the government to become the world\u2019s first not-for-profit group to be granted a mobile phone concession.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">A handful of public phone booths are hosted in the village\u2019s few shops. Until recently, P\u00e9rez paid 15 pesos ($0.80) a minute to call her husband. Once a month, she would travel two hours to Tlaxiaco \u2013 the nearest town with mobile phone signal and 3G internet \u2013 to send him photos of their young children. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">An experimental concession was awarded in May 2014, allowing affordable, community-owned telephone services to be installed in 16 communities in Oaxaca over the next two years.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">In July 2016, TIC \u2013 which works alongside Rhizomatica &#8211; was granted the first-ever permanent licence.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Nuyo\u00f3 is the first community to benefit from the July victory.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">In all, it cost 180,000 pesos ($10,000) for the equipment and installation \u2013 a third of what one multinational provider wanted to charge.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Subscription is free, but each registered user must pay 40 pesos a month \u2013 15 goes to TIC to cover overheads and serious repairs \u2013 and the rest stays in the community to cover the upfront running costs.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Calls within the network \u2013 which includes 17 communities so far \u2013 are free. International and national calls are cheap: one peso will buy five minutes to US.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>My bad.  It&#8217;s not an order of magnitude.
