{"id":181287,"date":"2016-08-11T18:04:00","date_gmt":"2016-08-11T23:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2016\/08\/11\/its-a-self-licking-ice-cream-cone-2\/"},"modified":"2016-08-11T18:04:00","modified_gmt":"2016-08-11T23:04:00","slug":"its-a-self-licking-ice-cream-cone-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2016\/08\/11\/its-a-self-licking-ice-cream-cone-2\/","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s a Self Licking Ice Cream Cone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The DEA has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/wonk\/wp\/2016\/08\/11\/the-deas-latest-stance-on-marijuana-explained\/\">decided to keep classifying Marijuana as a Schedule 1 Drug<\/a>, which means that they claim that it has no therapeutic value.<\/p>\n<p>It also means that a large portion of the DEA&#8217;s budget, the part that is driven by its anti-pot activities, remains safe.<\/p>\n<p>How convenient:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">For the fourth consecutive time, the&nbsp;Drug Enforcement Administration has denied a petition to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/to-your-health\/wp\/2016\/08\/10\/u-s-affirms-its-prohibition-on-medical-marijuana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lessen federal restrictions<\/a> on the use of marijuana.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">While  recreational marijuana use is legal in four states and&nbsp;D.C., and  medical applications of the drug have been approved in many more, under  federal law, it remains <a href=\"http:\/\/www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov\/schedules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a Schedule 1 controlled substance<\/a>, which means it&#8217;s considered to have&nbsp;&#8220;no currently accepted medical use&#8221; and a &#8220;high potential for abuse.&#8221;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The  gap between permissive state laws and a restrictive federal policy has  become increasingly untenable in the minds of many doctors, patients,  researchers, business owners and legislators.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">For instance, last fall, a Brookings Institution report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/wonk\/wp\/2015\/10\/20\/the-federal-government-is-stifling-medical-research-major-think-tank-declares\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">slammed the federal government<\/a>  for &#8220;stifling medical research&#8221; in the area of marijuana policy. As a  Schedule 1 drug, it&#8217;s much harder for researchers to work with marijuana  than with many other controlled substances. The American Academy of  Pediatrics has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aap.org\/en-us\/about-the-aap\/aap-press-room\/pages\/American-Academy-of-Pediatrics-Reaffirms-Opposition-to-Legalizing-Marijuana-for-Recreational-or-Medical-Use.aspx?nfstatus=401&amp;nftoken=00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000&amp;nfstatusdescription=ERROR:+No+local+token\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called on the government<\/a> to move marijuana into Schedule 2 to facilitate more research into medical uses.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Perhaps this determination should be made by an organization whose budget is not contingent on it remaining illegal.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The DEA has decided to keep classifying Marijuana as a Schedule 1 Drug, which means that they claim that it has no therapeutic value.
