{"id":181369,"date":"2016-07-18T17:58:00","date_gmt":"2016-07-18T22:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2016\/07\/18\/schadenfreude-new-labour-edition\/"},"modified":"2016-07-18T17:58:00","modified_gmt":"2016-07-18T22:58:00","slug":"schadenfreude-new-labour-edition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2016\/07\/18\/schadenfreude-new-labour-edition\/","title":{"rendered":"Schadenfreude, New Labour Edition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As if the Labour coup could not get any more pear shaped, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2016\/jul\/16\/owen-smith-angela-eagle-labour-contest-anti-corbyn\">his opponents are now at <b><span style=\"font-size: 100%; font-variant: small-caps;\">Each Other&#8217;s<\/span><\/b> throats<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">The Labour party has been engulfed by a fresh bout of infighting as the camps of the two potential \u201cunity candidates\u201d set to fight <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/jeremy-corbyn\">Jeremy Corbyn<\/a> for the leadership embarked on their own war of words.<\/p>\n<p>On the eve of a pivotal week for the future of the party, one MP supporting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/angela-eagle\">Angela Eagle<\/a> accused rival Owen Smith of using \u201csneaky tactics\u201d to manoeuvre himself into being the sole challenger. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a senior MP supporting Smith claimed there was an overwhelming consensus that only one candidate should emerge, and warned that currently supportive MPs would not give Eagle their nomination if she did not swiftly recognise the situation. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAngela needs to be very careful,\u201d said the source. \u201cIt is not a question of who deserves to be leader; it is about the best possible candidate to beat Jeremy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The row blew up following Smith\u2019s public declaration in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2016\/jul\/15\/angela-eagle-or-owen-smith-mps-say-only-one-should-challenge-jeremy-corbyn\">BBC interview on Friday<\/a> that Corbyn should be presented with just one challenger.
