{"id":181482,"date":"2016-06-13T20:54:00","date_gmt":"2016-06-14T01:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2016\/06\/13\/not-enough-bullets-37\/"},"modified":"2016-06-13T20:54:00","modified_gmt":"2016-06-14T01:54:00","slug":"not-enough-bullets-37","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2016\/06\/13\/not-enough-bullets-37\/","title":{"rendered":"Not Enough Bullets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What a surprise, Peabody Energy, the biggest coal company in the country, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2016\/jun\/13\/peabody-energy-coal-mining-climate-change-denial-funding\">has been bankrolling pretty much every nutty climate change denier they can find<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Who cares about the destruction of the world, we have profits to make:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Peabody Energy, America\u2019s biggest coalmining company, has funded at least two dozen groups that cast doubt on manmade climate change and oppose environment regulations, analysis by the Guardian reveals.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The funding spanned trade associations, corporate lobby groups, and industry front groups as well as conservative thinktanks and was exposed in court filings last month.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The coal company also gave to political organisations, funding twice as many Republican groups as Democratic ones.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Peabody, the world\u2019s biggest private sector publicly traded coal company, was long known as an outlier even among fossil fuel companies for its public rejection of climate science and action. But its funding of climate denial groups was only exposed in disclosures after the coal titan was forced to seek bankruptcy protection in April, under competition from cheap natural gas.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Environmental campaigners said they had not known for certain that the company was funding an array of climate denial groups \u2013 and that the breadth of that funding took them by surprise.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u201cThe breadth of the groups with financial ties to Peabody is  extraordinary. Thinktanks, litigation groups, climate scientists,  political organisations, dozens of organisations blocking action on  climate all receiving funding from the coal industry,\u201d said Nick Surgey,  director of research for the Center for Media and Democracy. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u201cWe  expected to see some denial money, but it looks like Peabody is the  treasury for a very substantial part of the climate denial movement.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Peabody\u2019s  filings revealed funding for the American Legislative Exchange Council,  the corporate lobby group which opposes clean energy standards and  tried to <a data-link-name=\"in body link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2013\/dec\/04\/alec-freerider-homeowners-assault-clean-energy\">impose financial penalties on homeowners with solar panels<\/a>, as well as a constellation of conservative thinktanks and organisations.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I really hope that someone can find a way to send their executives to a federal PMITA prison.<\/p>\n<p>They deserve it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What a surprise, Peabody Energy, the biggest coal company in the country, has been bankrolling pretty much every nutty climate change denier they can find.
