{"id":181495,"date":"2016-06-09T18:23:00","date_gmt":"2016-06-09T23:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2016\/06\/09\/panglossian-bullsh\/"},"modified":"2016-06-09T18:23:00","modified_gmt":"2016-06-09T23:23:00","slug":"panglossian-bullsh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2016\/06\/09\/panglossian-bullsh\/","title":{"rendered":"Panglossian Bullsh%$"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I just love the techno-utopians who seem to think that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/s\/601657\/tesla-knows-when-a-crash-is-your-fault-and-other-carmakers-soon-will-too\/#\/set\/id\/601644\/\">your car spying on your driving habits and phoning home will create a travel paradise<\/a>,<\/p>\n<p>The author thinks that Tesla invading your privacy is the bee&#8217;s knees:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The majority of cars sold in the U.S. now have event data recorders\u2014sometimes described as black boxes\u2014that log data to be examined in the event of an accident.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Most of those devices don\u2019t record as much detail as Tesla does, or send it out over the Internet. But Internet connectivity in cars is becoming more common, and carmakers are keen to make use of whatever data they can get from our vehicles.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Only about a quarter of new cars have the necessary technology today, but that&#8217;s expected to reach over 90 percent by 2020. Companies such as GM are open about their interest in expanding the range of data they collect on driver actions to open up new business opportunities.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">One big motivation for car companies is to get into the insurance business. Some insurance companies already offer discounts if you install a device in your car with sensors that monitor your driving habits, and GM has partnerships with several that tap into its OnStar system.
