{"id":181673,"date":"2016-04-18T18:28:00","date_gmt":"2016-04-18T23:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2016\/04\/18\/boaty-mcboatface-wins\/"},"modified":"2016-04-18T18:28:00","modified_gmt":"2016-04-18T23:28:00","slug":"boaty-mcboatface-wins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2016\/04\/18\/boaty-mcboatface-wins\/","title":{"rendered":"Boaty McBoatface Wins!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>And <a href=\"http:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2016\/04\/18\/world\/boaty-mcboatface-wins-vote\/index.html\">the crowd goes wild<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">The internet has spoken &#8212; and &#8220;RRS Boaty McBoatface&#8221; is the people&#8217;s choice to name a $300 million state-of-the-art polar research ship.<\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\"><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Over 7,000 names were submitted to the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) poll which closed April 16, but &#8220;Boaty McBoatface&#8221; won easily with 124,109 votes.&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/>It all began when the NERC invited the public to christen the 129-meter long icebreaker, the largest and most advanced British research vessel to date.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/>They asked for names that were inspirational, such as a historical figure or a landmark.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/>However, after former BBC presenter James Hand cheekily <a href=\"http:\/\/cnn.com\/2016\/03\/21\/world\/name-our-ship-boaty-mcboatface\/\">suggested the Boaty moniker <\/a>it quickly became the crowd favorite over more traditional names like &#8220;RRS Henry Worsley&#8221; after the <a href=\"http:\/\/cnn.com\/2016\/01\/25\/world\/henry-worsley-explorer-dies-antarctic\/\">British explorer who died in January while attempting a solo, unaided mission across the Antarctic.<\/a><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">It spawned countless silly riffs.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/>A UK train service from Portsmouth to Waterloo was briefly renamed &#8220;Trainy McTrainface&#8221; much to the amusement of its passengers.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">There&#8217;s no guarantee that they will follow through on the public&#8217;s choice but whatever its name, the vessel will be setting sail for Antarctica in 2019.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I think that an MP should bring this up during question time, because it would be epic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>And the crowd goes wild: The internet has spoken &#8212; and &#8220;RRS Boaty McBoatface&#8221; is the people&#8217;s choice to name a $300 million state-of-the-art polar research ship.
