{"id":181787,"date":"2016-03-16T17:58:00","date_gmt":"2016-03-16T22:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2016\/03\/16\/vatican-cans-nuncio-who-set-up-the-pope\/"},"modified":"2016-03-16T17:58:00","modified_gmt":"2016-03-16T22:58:00","slug":"vatican-cans-nuncio-who-set-up-the-pope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2016\/03\/16\/vatican-cans-nuncio-who-set-up-the-pope\/","title":{"rendered":"Vatican Cans Nuncio Who Set Up the Pope"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigan\u00f2, who set up a meeting between anti-gay (and non-Catholic) town clerk  Kim Davis without informing the Pope of the context <a href=\"http:\/\/www.advocate.com\/religion\/2016\/3\/14\/vatican-replace-diplomat-who-set-kim-davis-meeting\">is being removed as the Vatican&#8217;s diplomatic representative to the United States<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">The Vatican is replacing its controversial ambassador to the U.S.,  who arranged the meeting between Pope Francis and antigay Kentucky  county clerk <a href=\"http:\/\/www.advocate.com\/kim-davis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kim Davis<\/a> last fall.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Italian  Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigan\u00f2 will leave the position of apostolic  nuncio, the equivalent of an ambassador, and will be replaced by  Archbishop Christophe Pierre, a French-born clergyman who is currently  the nuncio to Mexico, Catholic magazine <a href=\"http:\/\/americamagazine.org\/content\/dispatches\/french-archbishop-christophe-pierre-expected-be-new-nuncio-united-states?utm_content=buffer118d8&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>America<\/i><\/a> reports, citing Sandro Magister, a blogger who covers the Vatican.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The  Vatican is not expected to confirm the news until the Obama  administration has agreed to the new nuncio\u2019s appointment, the magazine  notes, but it adds that \u201creliable sources\u201d expect an official  announcement before Easter, which falls on March 27 this year. Because  of his experience in Mexico, Pierre may well emphasize immigration  issues, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/acts-of-faith\/wp\/2016\/03\/10\/pope-francis-is-reportedly-appointing-a-new-ambassador-to-the-united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>The Washington Post<\/i><\/a> reports<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: blue;\">.\u2026\u2026\u2026 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: blue;\">During the pope\u2019s visit to the U.S. last year, Vigan\u00f2 arranged for him  to meet with Davis, the Rowan County clerk, who shut down all marriage  operations in her office to avoid serving same-sex couples after the  Supreme Court\u2019s marriage equality ruling.
