{"id":181808,"date":"2016-03-11T20:06:00","date_gmt":"2016-03-12T01:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2016\/03\/11\/nothing-to-see-here-move-along-3\/"},"modified":"2016-03-11T20:06:00","modified_gmt":"2016-03-12T01:06:00","slug":"nothing-to-see-here-move-along-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2016\/03\/11\/nothing-to-see-here-move-along-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Nothing to See Here, Move Along"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Is anyone surprise that the guests on Chris Matthews&#8217; show <i>Hardball<\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2016\/03\/11\/chris-matthewss-hardball-guests-have-given-79050-to-his-wife-kathleens-congressional-campaign\/\">have given over 75 thousand dollars to his wife&#8217;s campaign<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s an interesting racket:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">One day last June, MSNBC\u2019s Chris Matthews opened his show with some news: His wife, Kathleen Matthews, a former local news anchor and Marriott hotel executive, had announced a run for Congress, seeking to replace Chris Van Hollen in Maryland\u2019s 8th District. Matthews enthusiastically endorsed his wife\u2019s candidacy, and vowed to \u201coffer Kathleen whatever help I can.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The longtime host of Hardball added: \u201cAs a journalist, I also know how important it is to respect certain boundaries on my support for her both in my public role and here on MSNBC. And while most of you know that our show doesn\u2019t typically cover congressional races, I will continue to fully disclose my relationship with her as part of MSNBC\u2019s commitment to being transparent and fair in our coverage.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">In the ensuing months, Kathleen\u2019s name has rarely come up on Hardball. But many of the guests on the show have become generous donors to her campaign. And the transparency Matthews promised has not extended to mentioning that to his audience.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Using Federal Election Commission data and Hardball transcripts, The Intercept has identified 48 frequent guests of Matthews\u2019s program who have made donations to the Kathleen Matthews for Congress campaign. These individuals, their spouses, or their political action committees donated $79,050 as of December 31, 2015 \u2014 about 5 percent of the $1.5 million Matthews had raised as of that time.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Some of the guests made the donations after they were on the show \u2014 in some cases, long after. But in at least 11 of these cases, the Hardball guests appeared on the program after Kathleen Matthews announced her candidacy, and without any disclosure of the donations.
