{"id":181830,"date":"2016-03-06T19:05:00","date_gmt":"2016-03-07T00:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2016\/03\/06\/what-part-of-peace-officer-dont-you-get\/"},"modified":"2016-03-06T19:05:00","modified_gmt":"2016-03-07T00:05:00","slug":"what-part-of-peace-officer-dont-you-get","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2016\/03\/06\/what-part-of-peace-officer-dont-you-get\/","title":{"rendered":"What Part of &#8220;Peace Officer&#8221; Don&#8217;t You Get?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The police chief for the San Francisco police has announced new policies that are geared toward cops deescalating conflicts, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/bayarea\/matier-ross\/article\/SFPD-chief-s-proposed-use-of-force-policy-shift-6871872.php?t=42a9e95154&amp;cmpid=twitter-premiu\">the President of police union&#8217;s head is exploding<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The response of the union encapsulates everything that is wrong with the current trend of military oriented policing:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr \u2014 already under attack from Black Lives Matter activists over the shooting death of Mario Woods \u2014 is now facing criticism from his own rank and file for what they see as appeasement of department critics.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">At issue: a proposed policy change being drafted by Suhr and the Police Commission that emphasizes \u201cde-escalation\u201d of force when officers confront someone wielding a gun or knife. Of particular concern to the cops are instructions that officers \u201cseek cover\u201d and \u201cengage in thoughtful communication\u201d before doing anything else, unless there is an imminent threat.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The idea is to create enough \u201ctime and space\u201d so police won\u2019t need to open fire.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u201cI\u2019m not happy with that or other provisions in the draft, because it could put our officers in harm\u2019s way and at the same time jeopardize the safety of the community we serve,\u201d said Martin Halloran, president of the Police Officers Association.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The union called an emergency meeting Thursday night at the Irish Cultural Center that was attended by about 200 cops \u2014 some of whom were calling for a vote of no confidence in the chief. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>How can a cop object to not having to shoot someone?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The police chief for the San Francisco police has announced new policies that are geared toward cops deescalating conflicts, and the President of police union&#8217;s head is exploding.
