{"id":181982,"date":"2016-01-24T23:27:00","date_gmt":"2016-01-25T04:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2016\/01\/24\/headline-of-the-day-116\/"},"modified":"2016-01-24T23:27:00","modified_gmt":"2016-01-25T04:27:00","slug":"headline-of-the-day-116","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2016\/01\/24\/headline-of-the-day-116\/","title":{"rendered":"Headline of the Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/minutes\/128262\/michael-bloomberg-decides-hold-gun-head-american-democracy\"><b><span style=\"font-size: 120%; font-variant: small-caps;\">Michael Bloomberg decides to hold a gun to the head of American democracy<\/span><\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;a an interesting, and probably accurate assessment, that Bloomberg is making an implicit threat to the Democratic Party:  That if Sanders wins the nomination, then he will queer the general in favor of Donald Trump or Ted Cruz:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">According to this morning\u2019s <i>New York Time<\/i>s, former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has decided that there are not enough billionaires trying to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/01\/24\/nyregion\/bloomberg-sensing-an-opening-revisits-a-potential-white-house-run.html?smid=tw-nytimes&amp;smtyp=cur&amp;_r=0\">sway the outcome<\/a> of the next presidential election: \u201cIf Republicans were to nominate Mr. Trump or Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, a hard-line conservative, and Democrats were to pick Mr. Sanders, Mr. Bloomberg\u2014who <a href=\"http:\/\/thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com\/2007\/06\/19\/mayor-bloomberg-quits-the-gop\/\">changed his party affiliation<\/a> to independent in 2007\u2014has told allies he would be likely to run.\u201d <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Bloomberg\u2019s intent is clear: He\u2019s considering running not because he has a viable program he wants to promote, but because he wants to exercise a veto over the already existing parties\u2014especially a veto over whom the Democrats pick.
