{"id":182117,"date":"2015-12-14T19:40:00","date_gmt":"2015-12-15T00:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2015\/12\/14\/nice-work-if-you-can-get-it\/"},"modified":"2015-12-14T19:40:00","modified_gmt":"2015-12-15T00:40:00","slug":"nice-work-if-you-can-get-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2015\/12\/14\/nice-work-if-you-can-get-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Nice Work if You Can Get It"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The lobbying operation Purple Strategies is <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2015\/12\/14\/purple-strategies-guns\/\">lobbying for the NRA and for the gun control advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">The growing frequency of mass shootings has done little to change the political stalemate over guns in Washington, with gun rights and gun control groups each declaring that the latest massacre \u2014 for now, the one in San Bernardino \u2014 supports their diametrically opposed arguments.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">In this environment, no one can predict the future of gun policy in America. But at least one thing is certain: The team of political consultants at Purple Strategies will get paid.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The partners at Purple Strategies \u2014 a bipartisan lobbying firm and consulting agency formed in 2008 through a merger of Issue &amp; Image, a Democratic-led company, and National Media, a Republican campaign firm \u2014 have developed business relationships on both sides of the gun control debate, working with both the National Rifle Association and Everytown for Gun Safety, the umbrella organization for pro-gun control advocacy groups.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Everytown did not respond to multiple requests for comment. Officials from the NRA declined to provide a comment for this article \u2014 although they did ask us for more information about Everytown\u2019s ties to Purple Strategies.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">A spokesperson for Purple Strategies denied that the firm has relationships on both sides of the gun policy debate.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">We had asked Morgante to describe what appeared to be a close relationship between Purple and National Media, Red Eagle Media Group, and the American Media &amp; Advocacy Group, all of which had done work for the NRA.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u201cThe founding partners of Issue &amp; Image and National Media Public Affairs founded Purple, however, Purple Strategies operates independently and does not share clients or employees with any other company that you referenced,\u201d Morgante wrote.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Notwithstanding Morgante\u2019s claims, however, documents and business filings reviewed by The Intercept show considerable overlap between National Media and Purple Strategies when it comes to clients, staff, office space, and leadership.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Consider how this works for gun-related clients:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Everytown and Mayors Against Illegal Guns, two groups heavily funded by billionaire Michael Bloomberg to enact gun restrictions, have relied on Purple Strategies\u2019 Margie Omera and her firm, Momentum Analysis, for <a href=\"http:\/\/everytown.org\/documents\/2015\/03\/fl-ccw-polling.pdf\">multiple<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/everytown.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Purple-Strategies-Everytown-Poll-Memo-Final.pdf\">polling<\/a> services in 2014 and this year. Momentum Analysis was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.purplestrategies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/OmeroJoinsPurple_26March13.pdf\">acquired<\/a> by Purple Strategies in 2013. In a <a href=\"http:\/\/everytown.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Purple-Strategies-Everytown-Poll-Memo-Final.pdf\">memo to Everytown<\/a>, Omera identified herself as working for Purple Insights, \u201cthe in-house opinion research group at Purple Strategies.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The NRA\u2019s relationship with Purple and National Media is obscured through a network of affiliate companies. But documents <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">filed<\/a> with the Federal Communications Commission show that the NRA <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">regularly<\/a> buys political advertising through American Media &amp; Advocacy Group and Red Eagle Media, two firms that share an address in Alexandria, Virginia, with Purple Strategies and National Media.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Records maintained by the Alexandria Circuit Court <a href=\"https:\/\/prod01-cdn07.cdn.firstlook.org\/wp-uploads\/sites\/1\/2015\/12\/IMG_4378.jpg\">reveal<\/a> that Red Eagle Media is an \u201cassumed or fictitious\u201d business created and owned by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.natmedia.com\/our-firm\/\">National Media<\/a>.
