Now We Are Just Throwing Them Weapons Willy Nilly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We are now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2015\/oct\/13\/us-syria-rebels-ammunition-airdrop-isis-assad-regime\">randomly dropping weapons to fighters in Syria<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">After <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2015\/oct\/09\/us-freezing-of-syrian-rebel-training-scheme-shows-western-disarray\">scrapping its vetting program to aid Syrian rebels<\/a> against the Islamic State, the US military has airdropped tons of ammunition to a new band of fighters while softening its opposition to using its materiel to attack the Syrian leader, Bashar al-Assad.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">A spokesman for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/us-military\">US military<\/a> taskforce said on Tuesday that discussion of lifted restrictions on targeting was a \u201cmoot point\u201d since the 50 tons of ammunition airdropped to the Syrian Arab Coalition was not in an area where regime forces fight or Russian pilots overfly.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">While the US military previously vetted each Syrian militant receiving US sponsorship, now the program vets only the leadership of rebel groups, raising the prospect that US weaponry could migrate to the broader Syrian civil war. This was the main rationale once used by Barack Obama to limit the US commitment in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/syria\">Syria<\/a>, before indefinitely \u201cpausing\u201d the effort to build a Syrian anti-Isis force.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The White House announced on Friday that it was pausing the yearlong initiative to build the force that would pledge not to turn its US-provided weapons and training against Assad.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Legislators have said the restriction helped account for <a data-component=\"in-body-link\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2015\/sep\/16\/us-military-syrian-isis-fighters\">the paltry numbers of Syrian fighters<\/a> the $500m program fielded.
