{"id":182387,"date":"2015-10-04T20:20:00","date_gmt":"2015-10-05T01:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2015\/10\/04\/more-freedom-bombs\/"},"modified":"2015-10-04T20:20:00","modified_gmt":"2015-10-05T01:20:00","slug":"more-freedom-bombs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2015\/10\/04\/more-freedom-bombs\/","title":{"rendered":"More Freedom Bombs\u2026\u2026\u2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It looks like the US military <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/doctors-without-borders-airstrike-hits-afghan-hospital-killing-3-staffers\/2015\/10\/03\/2ed13104-b50a-48ec-9eb9-92db8ee3a876_story.html\">launched an intense and sustained airstrike against a hospital in Kunduz, Afthanistan<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">An airstrike apparently carried out by U.S. forces heavily damaged a charitable hospital in northern Afghanistan on Saturday, killing at least 19 people \u2014 three of them reportedly children \u2014 in an incident that a senior U.N. official equated to a war crime.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The airstrike occurred before dawn when a Doctors Without Borders trauma center in war-torn Kunduz was struck while doctors were treating dozens of patients. Hospital officials said they were assaulted from the air for 30 to 45 minutes, resulting in a large fire that burned some patients to death in their beds. Among those killed were 12 of the charity group\u2019s staff members, the group said.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u201cThis attack is abhorrent and a grave violation of international humanitarian law,\u201d said Meinie Nicolai, the group\u2019s president.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">While the charity\u2019s workers reported waves of bombs hitting their facility, the U.S.-led military coalition in Kabul issued a statement confirming one American airstrike that may have caused \u201ccollateral damage\u201d to a \u201cmedical facility.\u201d Authorities said it was launched against \u201cinsurgents who were directly firing upon U.S. servicemembers\u201d who had traveled to Kunduz to advise Afghan security forces.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">It was unclear how close Taliban fighters may have been to the hospital Saturday or whether the U.S. military didn\u2019t realize the building was a hospital. Afghan security officials said Taliban fighters had been pouring into the facility in recent days seeking treatment for gunshot wounds and other injuries.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The charity and other international organizations reacted with outrage, and the hospital\u2019s management said it had repeatedly informed the U.S.-led coalition of the facility\u2019s precise GPS coordinates over the past few months.
