Colbert asked him about his plan to send people to Mars, which Musk described as a \u201cfixer-up\u201d of a planet. That led to this exchange:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u201cEventually you can transform Mars into an Earthlike planet,\u201d Musk said. \u201cBy warming it up.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u201cWith a blanket?\u201d Colbert asked.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">No, Stephen, not with a blanket. With a great number of thermonuclear bombs:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Musk has publicly supported this idea for a long time, but we\u2019d wager it\u2019s the first time anyone\u2019s suggested it on a late-night talk show. The idea is that the nukes would melt the Mars\u2019 polar ice caps and kickstart a greenhouse effect\u2014similar to the one we\u2019re currently experiencing on Earth\u2014that would quickly make the planet warmer.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I will make a couple of points here:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First, you can get the same sort of effect, sans radiation, by dispersing a few tons of carbon black on the poles.&nbsp; The increased albedo does the rest.<\/li>\n<li>Second, this really is Bond villain nuts.
