{"id":182565,"date":"2015-08-09T19:22:00","date_gmt":"2015-08-10T00:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2015\/08\/09\/so-not-surprised-3\/"},"modified":"2015-08-09T19:22:00","modified_gmt":"2015-08-10T00:22:00","slug":"so-not-surprised-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2015\/08\/09\/so-not-surprised-3\/","title":{"rendered":"So Not Surprised\u2026\u2026\u2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It turns out that drug sniffing dogs are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alternet.org\/drugs\/drug-dog-outrage-trained-alert\">little better than a coin flip<\/a>, so they are yet <b><span style=\"font-size: 100%; font-variant: small-caps;\">another<\/span><\/b> way that law enforcement manufactures probable cause for a search:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Police are now speaking out about a decision from the 7th U.S.  Circuit Court of Appeals, which ruled that drug dogs signal for drugs  nearly every time they are sent to sniff a vehicle or home. This  decision shows that police dog searches are not legitimate&nbsp;and that they  are just used as a pretense for officers to violate the rights of  innocent people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: blue;\">The case stemmed from a 2010 traffic stop in  which 20 kilograms of cocaine were found in a vehicle after a search  from a police dog named \u201cLex.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: blue;\">The suspect ended up taking the  case to court, and while his sentence was upheld, some very interesting  points were uncovered during the investigation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: blue;\">It was revealed  that Lex, the drug dog in question, signaled for drugs 93% of the time,  even when there were no drugs present. These findings show that dog  sniffs are not accurate&nbsp;and are simply used as a tool to justify a full  police search. The findings also indicated that Lex was incorrect  roughly 40% of the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u201c<em>Lex\u2019s overall accuracy rate \u2026 is not much better than a coin flip,<\/em>\u201d the ruling stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026 <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/>Last year, we reported on the high-profile <a href=\"http:\/\/thefreethoughtproject.com\/video-cops-infatuated-colons\/\">case of Timothy Young.<\/a> Young was pulled over for failure to use his turn signal when a police K-9 was said to have alerted to his vehicle. After police found no evidence of drugs in his car or on his person, he was then handcuffed and driven to a hospital an hour away. During this forced visit to the hospital, Young was x-rayed and sodomized in search of non-existent substances.<\/p>\n<p>Still think if you do nothing wrong, you have nothing to fear?
