{"id":182572,"date":"2015-08-06T19:27:00","date_gmt":"2015-08-07T00:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2015\/08\/06\/what-does-a-cop-have-to-do-to-get-fired\/"},"modified":"2015-08-06T19:27:00","modified_gmt":"2015-08-07T00:27:00","slug":"what-does-a-cop-have-to-do-to-get-fired","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2015\/08\/06\/what-does-a-cop-have-to-do-to-get-fired\/","title":{"rendered":"What Does a Cop Have to Do to Get Fired?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>It appears that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2015\/aug\/04\/alabama-police-officer-murder-black-man-self-defense\">plotting to murder someone is not enough<\/a>:<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">A police officer in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/alabama\">Alabama<\/a> proposed murdering a black resident and creating bogus evidence to suggest the killing was in self-defence, the Guardian has learned.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Officer Troy Middlebrooks kept his job and continues to patrol Alexander City after authorities there paid the man $35,000 to avoid being publicly sued over the incident. Middlebrooks, a veteran of the US marines, said the man \u201cneeds a god damn bullet\u201d and allegedly referred to him as \u201cthat nigger\u201d, after becoming frustrated that the man was not punished more harshly over a prior run-in.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The payment was made to the black resident, Vincent Bias, after a secret recording of Middlebrooks\u2019s remarks was played to the city\u2019s police chiefs and the mayor. Elected city councillors said they were not consulted. A copy of the recording was obtained by the Guardian.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u201cThis town is ridiculous,\u201d Bias, 49, said in an interview. \u201cThe police here feel they can do what they want, and often they do.\u201d Alexander City police chief Willie Robinson defended Middlebrooks. \u201cHe was just talking. He didn\u2019t really mean that,\u201d he said in an interview.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Middlebrooks, 33, made the threatening comments to Bias\u2019s brother-in-law during a May 2013 encounter at his home, which Bias was visiting. Police came to the home after they discovered an unleashed dog.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">A lawsuit from Bias that the city paid to settle before it reached court stated that while Bias remained inside the house and out of earshot, the officer remarked to Bias\u2019s brother-in-law, who is white, that he was tired of \u201cthat nigger\u201d being released from jail.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The officer did say he had been cleared by a state inquiry into the incident and referred the Guardian to the state bureau of investigation (SBI) and Larkin Radney, the city attorney for Alexander City. A spokesman for the SBI, however, said: \u201cWe have no record of us investigating this case.\u201d Radney said: \u201cI really don\u2019t know what he\u2019s talking about.\u201d <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">During the interview at his office, Robinson said Middlebrooks \u201cwas disciplined\u201d when the recording came to light, but declined to elaborate.
