{"id":182584,"date":"2015-08-03T20:07:00","date_gmt":"2015-08-04T01:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2015\/08\/03\/yes-racism-is-rooted-in-economic-inequality\/"},"modified":"2015-08-03T20:07:00","modified_gmt":"2015-08-04T01:07:00","slug":"yes-racism-is-rooted-in-economic-inequality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2015\/08\/03\/yes-racism-is-rooted-in-economic-inequality\/","title":{"rendered":"Yes, Racism Is Rooted in Economic Inequality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is the title of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacobinmag.com\/2015\/07\/hillary-clinton-democatic-primary-sanders-netroots\/\">a thought provoking article in <i>Jacobin<\/i><\/a> that needs to be read in its entirety.<\/p>\n<p>A snippet to present their basic thesis:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Here\u2019s my question to the angry commenters: if racial inequality isn\u2019t merely a symptom of economic inequality, what is it a symptom of?<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">I already feel like I can hear the answer: it\u2019s a symptom of hundreds of years of slavery, colonialism, Jim Crow, and urban apartheid.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Yes. But what were slavery, colonialism, Jim Crow, and urban apartheid if not extreme forms of economic inequality?<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">What was the point of England\u2019s colonization of Ireland if not to impose a lucrative \u201ceconomic inequality\u201d on its victims? Was the urban apartheid of Haussmann\u2019s Paris not the \u201csymptom\u201d of nineteenth-century economic inequality?<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It provides a very good historical perspective (as one would expect with the author invoking Georges-Eug\u00e8ne Haussmann&#8217;s rebuilding of Paris under Napoleon III) on how bigotry is very much the product of exploitative economics.<\/p>\n<p>It should be noted that <i>Jacobin<\/i> is an explicitly Socialist publication, and socialism has a long history of viewing pretty much everything in society through the prism of economics,<sup>*<\/sup> so this focus is unsurprising.<\/p>\n<p>Still, it is a good read, and very thought provoking.<\/p>\n<p><sup>*<\/sup><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">In fact, I would argue that the lasting contribution of Marx to the study of society was his focus on the economic.  Certainly, the degree to which all aspects of society, whether they be government, judicial, or social are viewed largely through the lens of economics has expanded enormously since Marx published <i>Das Kapital<\/i> almost 150 years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is the title of a a thought provoking article in Jacobin that needs to be read in its entirety.
