{"id":182593,"date":"2015-07-31T20:14:00","date_gmt":"2015-08-01T01:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2015\/07\/31\/live-in-obedient-fear-citizen-45\/"},"modified":"2015-07-31T20:14:00","modified_gmt":"2015-08-01T01:14:00","slug":"live-in-obedient-fear-citizen-45","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2015\/07\/31\/live-in-obedient-fear-citizen-45\/","title":{"rendered":"Live in Obedient Fear, Citizen!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>It appears that the Justice Department used some proxies to suggest that <a href=\"https:\/\/firstlook.org\/theintercept\/2015\/07\/30\/obama-administration-war-apple-google-just-got-uglier\/\">Apple and Google could be charged with providing material support for terrorists if they sell securely encrypted smart phones to someone who turns out to be a terrorist<\/a>:<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">The Obama administration\u2019s central strategy against strong encryption seems to be <a href=\"https:\/\/firstlook.org\/theintercept\/2015\/07\/08\/fbi-doj-name-new-enemy-crypto-wars-apple-google\/\">waging war<\/a> on the companies that are providing and popularizing it: most notably Apple and Google.<\/p>\n<p>The intimidation campaign got a boost Thursday when a blog that frequently promotes the interests of the national security establishment <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawfareblog.com\/civil-liability-end-end-encryption-threat-or-fantasy-part-ii\">raised the prospect<\/a> of Apple being found liable for providing material support to a terrorist.<\/p>\n<p>Benjamin Wittes, editor-in-chief of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawfareblog.com\/\">LawFare<\/a> blog, suggested that Apple could in fact face that liability if it continued to provide encryption services to a suspected terrorist. He noted that the post was in response to an idea <a href=\"http:\/\/motherboard.vice.com\/read\/senator-crime-victims-should-be-able-to-sue-apple-google-for-encrypting-data\">raised by<\/a> Sen.
